Ok so me and a Buddy xc_rider08 are meeting up with some people to ride in Elkford B.C. We are from North Dakota and I have a few questions about crossing the border.

1. I will be pulling a 2 place trailer with my pickup and two sleds. What do I need for registration, Proof of Insurance etc?

2. Was thinking of filling up gas cans in the US and taking them to Canada was told US gas is cheaper. Can you carry gas over the border in tanks?

3. I have never crossed the border is there anything I need to know or have when I do...Besides passport I know that.

Thanks for any advice.

Check this out. To save yourself a ton of headache, don't just get advice from guys on here who probably know what they're talking about. I would call one of the numbers on this page (Link Below) and get the info directly from customs so you know for sure what you need to cross hassle free. Shouldn't be too complicated. From my experience the customs people are some sort of gentic mutation from a Hitler gene. They have absolutely no sense of humor so don't try to joke around with them. Have your passport open to your picture page when you hand it to the agent. Lift your sunglasses up and look directly into their eyes when you talk to them. Do not offer any extra information, only answer the questions they ask. Finally try crossing naked from the waist down to see if they notice. I've always wanted to try that but don't have the balls. Oh yeah, gas is quite a bit more in Canada.

Taking gas is fine. Bring proof of insurance / registration on everything. Sleds, trailer, vehicle etc.

No guns, drugs etc. Do Americans need a passport to come up here? I know we need one to get into the US!

Just have the regular stuff... its not complicated, as they said don't joke around, be straight and curtious and you shouldn't have problems. Have passports ready and be prepared to show registrations for everything, and insurance for the truck in the event they ask for it.

Remember, speed limits are in Km/h instead of Mph, it takes a while to get use to looking at the bottom half of the speedo, hahaha:beer;

Ok thanks everyone. I have been doing a some reading and I have read a few times that I need a yellow card from my insurance company to show insurance on my vehicles. Has anyone herd of that?

Its not the going into Canada that is the tuffie... its the going home that always seems to be a pain for me.... Nothing but curtious going up, nothing but rotten comming home . Yep licence, reg, insurance on all vehicles. Keep it to the point and simple answers. Here is a great link on passport info and requirements on what is allowed (amounts) with out paying duties and what is prohibited.

I am from canada and go to the US for gas all the time. I was told by the boarder guards you are not allowed to carry jerry cans across but it is the guards discreation as to weather you have to pay duty on it or not.

I was going to og down to Baker to go rideing so i went to the board and asked how i prove that we did not buy the sleds in the states and all you have to do is fill a card out before you leave your home country. It will say that you took it down and that you can bring it back without any confusion.

just the stuff that i know from crossing

Yes you need the card from your insurance agent not tuff just go in and they will give it to you. It proves you have sufficient insurance on your vehicles. No sunglasses when crossing(everyone in vehicle) be polite and answer their questions honestly and you will have no probs. Worst is you get tore down (full inspection of vehicles, trailers and contents) and yes they have absolutley no sense of humor, none whatsoever crack some jokes and you can count on a teardown believe me spent 2 hours in there one day while they did a background check on all 5 of us.

All of the above AND:

If they ask if you have been arrested/convicted of minor crimes in the US, just say NO.

For example. I was with a guy on a m/c trip and he admitted to having a DUI. Customs said they didn't have to let him in, they wanted like $120 for a "records check" in both countries. He was told he could pay up, wait 2 hours and maybe be denied entry; depending on the records.

His only other option was to turn around and go home. He finally go thru, but a 2 hour wait and wallet $120 lighter.......

what day are you and stripe crossing? I'll make sure to call the border ahead of time!

I buy my fuel in BC when I go there to help support their gas stations and economy even though it is more expensive. But yah why deal with a headache at the border.Hauling more fuel = heavy load your truck will burn more fuel so the savings will be smaller anyways.Sled fuel cost is small compared to truck fuel and hotel rooms and booze anyways. And I am cheap too told the wife no more salon days new purses or shoes because sledding season is getting close.
