I have only used mine a bit but I use the highest resolution (r5); it has a narrower field of view 127 compared to 170 with the other resolutions.

I have the Blinking Red light on so someone can tell me if it is filming for sure.

I have the Beep on because i can push the shutter button and start/stop filming and I can usually hear it at an idle.

I let it run Wednesday to see how many minutes I get with a 4gb card and I had 22 minutes.

r5 - best picture, takes up tons of space, takes forever to upload and view on youtube
r4 - tallest setting, good for helmet cam facing back at you, but not wide angled
r3 - great picture, a little more fishbowl effect vs. 1080, but uploads faster and still looks good on big screen

i think r3 is best all around unless you plan on transferring to dvd and doing more serious videos.

I usually use r3 for the mere 60 fps factor. A wider view which I like as well.
