GM ignition switch issue

How does the switch being turned off kill you? Couldn't you just coast over to the side of the road and call AAA? I understand that the air bags won't employ but maybe the focus should be why your daughter drove off the road and hit the tree to begin with?

i think what they are implying is that the switch off = no motor or power which results in loss of power brakes and steering maybe even locking the steering column ~ I'm just taking a guess though~

switch off = base braking always works
no power steering so ya gotta put your phone down and use both hands
you could lock steering column but why would you turn key off while
vehicle is moving " your driving " ?

Guess we'll have to get the rest of the story..maybe congress will investigate and " fix it " for us like................
OMFG rear view cameras so azzclowns don't run over their own children !!!

Seriously???? What happens when Mommy/Daddy run over them after the minivan has a cam?? Sue the phone company, boss, coffee store?
Makes ya wonder how we all made it as long as we have.

Make light of this all you want, but if you or one of your family members suddenly lost power steering and power brakes, I think you would be singing a different tune. Fractions of a second in reaction time could be the difference between a non event and a head on collision at highway speeds.

Your born, chit happens then you die. Blamming someone else for the chit that happens along the way only makes your journey a less positive and productive one. IMO

there are actually alot of young folks that can't believe cars didn't used to have power everything~ or the old vacuum brakes~ I had a 2 ton truck with that~ and if ya lost the motor~~about all ya could so was say chit!! and keep it in gear to keep the motor turning over so ya might have something~

I guess some people don't remember when cars came without power steering and brakes........:tsk:

My first car a 95' Ford Escort did not have power steering. Not sure on the brakes though. It was a Manuel, and I could drive that thing no problem 1 handed while shifting. My friend almost crashed it at the first red light we came to when he was driving as he barely made the turn.

I had a 98' Honda CRV with power steering, and the belt broke. I drove it without power steering for a few months no problem.

This is what I drove in high school. No power steering or brakes and I had to pump the btakes 4 times before I had enough brakes to stop

everything is designed to be to damn stupid simple, yes someone getting hurt or injured is always a tragedy, but seems like everything we have now is SO simple and does so much for us, nobody has any actual skill or operational proficiency.

The truck I drove to highschool, not but 8 years ago, i could put 20 people in it now and i bet maybe 1 of them could even get it to move. marginally running carbed motor, old manual with some touchy clutching needed to get it running out of a light. thats how you learn to drive. not hopping in mom n' pops 2014 suv, push to start, slap it in "D" mash the gas, cruise facebook on your phone, listen to the 10000 channels of satellite radio, whatever. No focus on driving, the new cars are more focused on how much crap they have put into it to distract you and isolate you from the others operating these 2-5k# vessels down the road at dangerous speeds.

turn the radio off, roll the windows down, enjoy, and appreciate driving for the wonderful blessing it is, saving us from walking or riding a horse that far! not just a way to snap some "selfies" and #bored #rollintowork #springsintheair....

a car is more lethal then a gun in so many ways, but it would litterally be like watching someone walking around just sort of shooting haphazardly not aiming while playing with their phone or something. That would see national news coverage, but someone bouncing between the lines texting is just sort of frowned upon.

/end rant.

They say a lot of these incidents are caused by heavy key chains. In that case I cant see why its anyones fault if you have a keychain like I've seen some people pack around.

So it's switching to the lock position? In that case I can see why there would be a few crashes.

Or remember that a lot of them had huge steering wheels and different ratios to compensate for the lack of power assist.

Um, not sure about the other makes and models, but GM trucks from at least '04 on up DON'T lock the steering wheel at all, ever. Key on key off it dont matter, you can turn the thing any time you want. And as for the brakes, pretty sure you could still lock them up if you are in pannic mode, hell use both feet. I know id probably bust the seat outta the floor trying to stop if i had to...

Bottom line is no one will take responsibility for their stupidity. Its always someone elses fault because they didnt make it impossible for someone to be that stupid. Well, stupid hurts, and sometimes even, stupid kills.

Ya...

Or remember that a lot of them had huge steering wheels and different ratios to compensate for the lack of power assist.

... and the days when you could get a 3 spd manual on the column.... 3 on the tree???

The issue is that when the ignition switch turns off you lose power steering and power brakes. People probably panic, in a few cases they were in an accident afterwards and I don't think an airbag will deploy unless the car is on. So ignition off means the airbag is off.

The Steering wheel shouldn't lock with it in gear. I've never seen a car that will lock when it is in gear. Generally the ignition won't turn off fully with it in gear.
