GM 6.0 owners - let's compare mileage

stock - 05 ext cab short bed 2500 6.0 4.10 got 15.5mpg once, averaged around 13-14 empty hooked onto 6000lb horse trailer 9.
added 265/70/17 mudders ( to wide) and a hypertech averages around 12-13 girlfriend got 14 on highway once also had a throttle body spacer.
Although the hypertech made it run like it actually had 300hp, ran it right up to 128 mph to.
Next I'll have a 8.1 or duramax and a 5.3 to tow the lighter stuff.

tried the seafoam and a lot of other stuff, no change

2001 1500hd 33in tires straight pipe dual exhaust with 4.10 gears

towing 4 place open sled trailer with 4 sleds i get 13-14 depending on hills.

no load i see 17 average

truck was a dog with bad mpg

i did the true duals with straight back from cab whole new truck.

i know in 01 they had 6 different transmissions you could get as options maybe that is the difference? when on scanner gives me the transimission number punch that into gms database and it's suppose to be top of the line tranny for that year

All the classic style had the 4L80E tranny with exception of the 1/2 tons with Vortec Max which i believe is the 4L65E.

Or manuals were NV4500s

New body trucks are 6L80E I believe

I'm surprised i don't see anyone on here with the 5 speed manual. Curious if that helps mileage and pulling power.

I always thought my 5.3 would of worked a lot better with a manual tranny. Seemed like the auto would never stay in OD.

There may be a difference in axles & frame from 1500 HD to 2500 HD? Just had a rear axle seal replaced a few months ago and the mechanic told me the 2500 HD is actually a 1 ton chassis/driveline with 3/4 ton springs.

I'd be curious too about the manual vs auto tranny.

Story - Different trucks but my buddy and I both had 91 GMC 350ci extended cabs, both pulling 2 place trailers with family and gear. I had one extra person vs him. My truck had the 700r4 auto and he had the 5 speed manual. We hit the bottom of Sherman Hill east of Laramie and "raced" to the top. He smoked me, no contest, and to take cake, at the next fuel stop he got about 2mpg better than me. I still have to endure that story now and then, LOL, and he is still racking up miles on that truck. Closing in on 300k now with only a few clutches and intake manifold gaskets.

ya, from what i understand the 1500hd and the regular 2500 are standerd 3/4 tons and the 2500hd and 3500 are 1 tons. i'm not positive but i'd think the standard 3/4 tons would have the 10.5 inch rear end where the 2500hd and the 3500 have the hugeamungus 11.5 inch.

i wish i'd have searched a bit more and found a 6-spd when i bought my 8.1, i've always been a manual trans guy and said i would never own an auto. my buddy had an 8.1 with the 6-spd and it felt like it had quite a bit more grunt than my auto. however i do gotta say the alli's not to bad for an auto and is probably the only auto i will own.

did they even make a 5.3 with a manual trans? i think the only manuals i've seen since they started usin the LS type motors are in the heavier trucks with the 6.0 or bigger. and i dont even think the manual is an option in any of them in the new body style.

superchips programmer with the race tune
2.5" straight pipe all the way...terribly loud
4.10 gears

I constantly average 13-15 mpg, and no better.

And to answer the previous thread, yes they did make a manual tranny for the 5.3L

I have a 2008 crew cab 3500 single wheel with 265 tires and 4:10 gears. Last trip I took was a 600 mile trip to Tennessee to pick up a ton (yes right about 2000 lbs) of rocks and 600 miles back to Michigan. Anyway I was running about 80mph most of the way down and got 15.5 mpg and coming back I ran right around 68 mph with the rocks and got 16.5 mpg. I pull a large steel enclosed trailer full of sleds and it is 8.5 to 9 and around local it is only 11-12 mpg. I pretty much use it for trips, camping and towing and have a Geo Tracker for daily use. This is hands down the best truck I have ever owned. If I hauled or towed trailers for a living I would get a diesel but for what I do I can't justify it.

I have had two trucks with the 6.0 first one was a 2001 ex cab long bed with 265 tires 225000 miles still got a fuzz over 14 on the highway unless it was down a quart of oil it would get almost 15. Pulling a tall V nose enclosed 2 place I would get 8-9 running 65 to 70. Never did anything to that truck but basic maintenance.
Replaced it with 2003 1500hd and it has 373 gears same tires only 60000 miles now gets the same mileage towing a few times I have got over 15 empty on trips thru Indiana, which is flat compared to Michigan. One thing I always get better mileage coming back from the UP than on my way up.....

Don't know my mileage. When it gets low on fuel I fill it. dont realy worry about mailage. I knew teh outcome whe I bought the pickup. If I wanted milage I would of bought a car.

05 2500 6.0L Chevy with WHIPPLE 8PSI (MAKES 10 PSI @ 6800 RPM)

14 mpg HWY

8 mpg pulling

.01 MPG winning the truck pulls, twisting the frame enough the fan rubs on the shroud

30,000 miles of abuse, due to overspeed (pulling a 28' x 11' tall enclosed) of the blower aka 2nd gear @ 80 MPH and 6800 RPM for long lengths of time I ate 2 lysolm head units, before going with the updated 2.3L sized Whipple in house manufactured head unit.

It was my favorite truck of all time! From Drag racing to truck pulls to 300 yard rolling burnouts, it was (and is for the new owner) a HOOT!

04 GMC Crew 2500 NonHD

04 GMC 2500 6.0/4l80e 6" lift on 285/75/17 or 315/70/17 full intake, Flowmaster exhaust w/ Wait4me custom tune 35" tires taken into account. I get 15-16 mostly highway to/from work. 10mpg pulling 4 place enclosed or camp trailer. 13 when wife drives. I went from a superchips handheld tuned for the tires at 11.9 to the wait4me tune, it runs better and picked up 3+ mpg. If you REALLY drive nice and pay attention i've seen 17.5
