Getting sleds an ATVs regestered in CA

i am leaving alaska and moving to CA, in AK sled and atv are not titled just reg. at the DMV how hard is it going to be REG/title these in CA

It depends on the DMV location.

If in the city like where I live and noone ever seen a snowmobile will take DAYS. I fought with DMV for several days over a smog certificate for a 2 cycle sled.

Then they sent me to a police station because they did not know how to "safety check" and find the proper tags on the sled.

You will need a title / bill of sale etc. to get this done.

Make sure the sled have the serial # (bulkhead) and manufacturer sticker (tunnel right side) on it or you'll be getting one from the manufacturer.

If you go to a DMV in an area where they have sleds will be muchj easier.

Go to CA DMV site to get details

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/

Snowmobile is an OSV Over the Snow Vehicle.

Should be $50 for two years and watch out saying you just bought it or else you'll pay sales tax.

Where are you moving to in California???

you have to have a title or manufacturer title, norcal is used ot sled the rest might be tricky.
What area you heading to?

I just puchased a sled and live in Southern Cal. I have an appt. next week at the DMV to change the title over to my name. Am I going to be in for some "red tape". Im sure they dont deal with many sleds. What information will I need to brings besides the original title?

Any of you ride sport quads during the off season

The entire area around EDWARDS is one big off road ATV mecca.

Because of temperstures most ATV riding near EDWARDS is in the winter where it is in the 50 -70 F

Summer time can easily be over 110F by mid day . Then a rain storm and its 70F then back to 110F an hour later. Beware of flash floods.

Many riders go to the mountains to ride ... the same place you would snowmobile.

Dumont Dunes OHV Area

Barstow El Mirage Dry Lake OHV Area

Barstow Johnson Valley OHV Area

Barstow Olancha Dunes

Barstow Rasor OHV Area

Just north is Red rock canyon and thousands of people ride bikes quads there.

The entire area around EDWARDS is called the high desert 2-4K feet off road park..

Best place to live relative to Palmdale Lancaster would be Tahachapi BUT is expensive and at least 45 minutes to an hour drive away.

But that depends what EDWARDS gate you enter. There is a north gate near BORON (like a big truck stop going to Vegas) and another gate off the 14 in Palmdale/Rosamond WEST and a South gate entering Palmdale.

I would contact every city around and get a "welcome package" sent to you telling you what is in the area.

The toughest thing about the area is the wind/dust storms and able to blow 70 plus.

There are areas in Palmdale Lancaster ROSAMOND that are ... okay. The problem with the area is during the last boom in the 80's cheap houses were built there and many gangs from LA moved there. So you got to know where not to live. Plus if you have children the schools are not the best.

It all depends if you have children. If none then you have lots of places to go ... many many places. With kids then you're going have to find a good school district.

Lancaster / Palmdale has every store shop movie theater , city parks etc. that any city would have Cosco , Sears , 1000's of retaurants etc. . North / East / West are all smaller desert towns. Apple Valley South East of the base is okay.

What kind of place are you looking to rent? APT or house?

http://www.apartmenthunterz.com/california/apartments/Lancaster/Lancaster.html

I would find a place to rent month to month in Lancaster near the base and then take your time finding a place.

Heck if you don't have kids and want to ride ATV's out your back door look at California City, Barstow, Boron.

The nearest place to ride a sled is up the 395 to nine mile road then Sherman Pass Road off near Pearsonville 2 hours. Plus you can 4WD and bike there at 9,000 feet !!

South east corner of the Sequoia

Most sledding in southern / Central California is up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains accessible from HWY 395 on the east side and HWY 99 on the west.

There ia a few hundred acreas of riding in the Angeles National forest and some near Big Bear California but the snow is not deep.

You are welcome.

There are 1,000 and 1,000 of miles of pretty flat trails.

Load up the trailer ... and put it in a C-5? :D

How are you coming down ? Need any road trip advice?

In California the speed limit for trailers is 55MPH and autos can go up to 70MPH.
Most of the time you pull a trailer around 60-62 MPH and not get a ticket.

Well, you will probably go down the Hwy 5.

Might I suggest at Sacramento you go from the 5 to the 99 south to Bakersfield then east on the 58.

The Sierra Nevada mountain range will be on your left and you can stop at towns like Fresno , Tulare , Bakersfield for gas food.

If you head straight down the 5 there is not much between Sacramento / SanFrancisco to Bakersfield except the occasion off ramp oasis.

The 5 to Bakersfield is about an hour drive but the smoother ride and speed makes it worth it if you are pressed for time and don't need to stop.

If you want a real scenic route of the mountains of the Sierra Nevadas at Sacramento from the 5 go to the 80 east up to Lake Tahoe then south on the 395 then 14 to Edwards on the east side. The 395 goes on the west side of Edwards. The 14 commences/ends near Navy China Lake base.

Sacramento is around 200 elevation. Lake Tahoe is around 5,000 feet and you'll be coming from Donner Pass at 7000 feet. You will go up and down elevation on a fairly nice road driving 55-62 MPH most of the way. You will drop of the Sierras between Mammoth Lakes and Bishop (the last place to snowmobile until you go to the Sequoias about 4 hours away from Bishop)
Even though you are coming from AK mountain areas it will be amazing to understand the terrain change once you drop out of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the sand pit of the high dessert.

Google Earth (software download) is a good way to see the area as close as 3 feet.

Fuel prices will change by as much as $1 a gallon out here so look at http://gasbuddy.com/ to find places.

Cosco gas (membership required) can be reasonable, Shell has a credit card for 5% off on all Shell gas and Discover card offers a 5% discount
American Express offers a deal to but can be accomplished with a Cosco membership.
