Gear down=best bang for your buck in the mountains. Imo
I like the 2.42 I've ridden on the 163" and that's what I went with this year.

How much do you weigh? Tom suggested 2.33 for me. Im mid 200s and a 163.

Great idea! I go with the 2.25 on my 155 with a turbo. I'd like to hear your thoughts after a few rides with the 2.33 on a 163.

i dont ride trees alot but i do like a responsive sled i geared down my old m=1000 and loved it

I weigh 250 with gear on a stock 12-163 what would you guys recommend? do about 50/50 trees and boondocking is there a certain brand that is better than another? or a good place to get gears / gear sets from?

yep

Kurt's Polaris, they have two kits, both work well, one is around 2.36, and one is 2.43 or so... The 2.4 one is a proven winner. It just flat works. I am trying the 2.3 set this year, I'm betting it's gonna work well too..

if you've got a 12 the kurts kit isn't what you need. its for quick drive.

I went with a 19 top gear and 45 bottom gear giving me a 2.36:1 and I'm loving it but I feel I could have gone with 19/46 (2.42:1) and been happier. I never noticed any loss in top speed at all.
