Gearing affects Clutching

Ok heres the deal. Geared my sled down. Went from a 19/49 to a 20/51. Before the gearing my clutches ran pretty cool only luke warm. And i would hold 8100 RPMs allday no matter what. after the gearing my RPMs go to 8100 then fall off to about 77-7800 does this in the steep n deep, on trail dont matter. Tried to clicker down didnt help at all. tried to clicker up to see made it worse. Plus now my clutches are very hot. My primary is ALOT hotter and im thinking its making my secondary get hotter. So any ideas??

One other thing. Now im getting alot of belt streaks on the primary towards the top 1/4 of the clutch face.

That's a very, very small gearing change. You actually geared up from 2.58 to 2.55. Gearing can definitely impact clutching, but I wouldn't expect a noticeable difference from that small of a change.

Did you change drivers? Otherwise, I'm with newtrout trying to figure out why the negligible gear change. Also, did you have to work to get the gears and chain in the box....what sled is this?

Only thing I can think is you have a very tight chain and mofo'd your bearing.

Its on a 2005 RT 1000. The 51 gear is specialy made gear from Turbo AL that fits in the RT chaincase. The Chain is not tight its actually just about stock right now. Besides the drop in RPMS all of a sudden the sled runs flawless. Im about as even as possible with my cousins 09 XP. Maybe ill check the bearings could have just been coincedence.

Ya, there is something else going on besides the gear change. If it was ALOT lower gearing change I would expect those results....but not with virtually identical gearing.

You pretty much just robbed Peter to pay Paul.
Tear apart your chain case again and make sure everythings the way it should be.
You really shouldn't have noticed ANY change.
I'd put a 20 top in if you actually want to gear down...but remember gearing down will lose you RPMs.
Might want to either take out some pin weight or try a 160/350.

Ive tried the following gears: 21/49 20/49 19/49 20/51 and 19/51. The 20/51 performed the best with the highest track speed. Ill just order up some new bearings and change them out. and how would the 160/350 change my upshift/backshift if any at all?

Would make for SLIGHTLY more RPM....so if you are already at the correct RPM it will slow shift out and quicken backshift....but VERY slightly. If you are running low on RPM it MAY give you the RPM you need which would increase the upshift. Tough to say the results for sure, just have to try it.:beer;
