gear ratio change effect on clutching

I’ve been looking for a 42 tooth reverse lower but until I find a used one I want to put in the 18 tooth upper I have and use it with my 38 tooth lower. Will changing from 40/23 (1.90) to 38/18 (2.11) significantly change my clutching?

IOW if it messes up my clutching then should I just wait until I get a 42 lower and change the clutching at the same time and leave what I have in it for now?

gears

I tried a 19 38 combo but it had too much slack in the chain. not loose enuff to run a 66 pin chain but too loose for a 68. If you want to try it i have a brand new 66 pin chain I will make you a deal on. as far a difference in clutching you will get more r's for sure but you should be able to soften the secondary spring and pull them down.
in my situation the sled came with 23-38 gear (wtf) it would pull rpm on the trail but not climbing and made lots of clutch heat.
I put 19-40 now it revs a little high on the trail but pulls rpms climbing and i can run the wheels off her without overheating the clutches. no change to the clutching.

Good stuff, you've saved me from tearing it all apart only to find that my 68t chain is too long. I think I'll wait for a 42t before changing things.
