Garrett turbo question

GT ball bearing.
small frame, mid frame and large frame.
GTX same breakdowns but with the higher flowing compressor wheel and housings.

sleds fall into the mid frame family ie 2860, 2871, 3076 etc.

what is it you are wishing to learn or look at PJ ?

Gus
garretts best friend !!!:bolt:

I have the 2860 on my sled and I just would like to know more about it. What to expect, what to look for, reliability.

What most are seeing with that particular turbo is for the most part good.
Those who have swapped to the larger compressor 2876 have found power increases from 2800 rpm to wide open and much cooler charge temps.

As far as reliability goes ,,, its a garrett, they last forever when the oil is kept flowing to them.. they are real workhorses with NO limits or restrictions on use.

Ya, the trend is to larger compressor wheels for added flow at low rpm, the tiny compressors do NOT flow UNTIL they are spinning very fast which is what we call LAG. With that speed comes heat.. its all 30 weight ball bearings these days...

You can expect a solid performing unit for yrs to come so go out and keep riding PJ.

i had a the aero 66 charger and the 2871 garrett out last week, the aero seams to have more grunt off the bottom end over the 2871, less lag, and for 7lbs between both for max boost, the aero won hands down in getting their quicker and the power it was making

now if the garette can be turned up to 15lbs, that could be a different result

Fredw--isn't the Trask Performance a 2860, or were you comparing to a different turbo sled. Watched your video w/ the Aero, it looked impressive.

I am running the same setup as PJ, so I appreciate your reply Gus. It is good to here that a 2860 isn't a waste of time. I really like my turbo setup. I had a set of pistons that had around 800 miles of boost that I changed-burn down when powerjet plugged- and they didn't look to bad as far as heat. Might try a bigger turbo on the next sled for more bottom.

not sure what the trash has, maybe its the smaller one, tss kit had the 2871 he said tho, and it felt the same as trash

on stating on what i said above, i have never had the aero charger before, and so far with around 700 miles boosted its be flawless, but nno clue how much longer it will survive

I don't think I would be worried about longevity at those boost levels w/ the aero. Higher boost it might be a concern. Have a cat to finish this year that I am installing a 53 aero, sure makes for a clean setup.

PJ- are you thinking of trying a different turbo on your sled?

I much prefer the 76 compressor on the 800 cc sleds .

Once you try one you will see at just the flip of the throttle what the difference is...

Good riding to you PJ, have a safe fun season..

No, not really. I'm not relly excited about dropping 1300 to try the next size turbo.

What fuel were you running when your powerjet clogged?

Plugging wasn't fuel related-it was debris. A piece of the hose that runs form the bowl to the jet must have caught the edge of the barb fitting and tore, or just wasn't cut clean. If I would have been watching the gauges a little closer, I would have noticed it wasn't getting fuel. I was in the process of passing a turbo cat, so I couldn't let off!!

No, I can see that. I'm gonna have my fair share of turbo pros and T-cats this weekend. Time to show them EFI ain't all that.

I'm stoked to plant that new narrow front end and see the difference.

get a 3071 with the .64 exhaust housing on it.. bolts right up, you can sell your 2860 and your not out that much $$.. trust me.. you will crap bricks coming off a 2860;

Have one sitting around I can try? Maybe next year, I've spent plenty on sleds this year and still haven't ridden:face-icon-small-dis
