Full Face Mountain Biking Helmets - Who is using them and which one do you like?

Escamanaze I think a GOOD mountain bike helmet is plenty safe for mountain riding and I bet they are a LOT cooler with better venting. I am looking at doing the same thing, thanks for the thread. The best snowmo helmets are just as light but they don't have nearly the venting that I have seen. Most of our riding we aren't moving that fast anyway. I will take it a little easier on the trail, 80mph into a 3' diameter tree would test any helmet. BTW, I am a pretty big safety nazi, wear my tether, avy vest, armor, knee braces, mouthguard and take a avy and first aid training.

I thought you wore a mouth piece, cup and neck brace too? Or was I misinformed?

That POC helmet is pretty sweet. The fact it can take multiply impacts is awesome, for biking. Odds are you are going to bail pretty often I've cracked a few helmets on the mt bike. Snowmo on the other hand I try not to crash so that I'd need a helmet at all costs.

$500 is pretty steep as well!

I've used my giro remedy for multiply seasons works great. On cold days you do need a balaclava.

Balaclava?

So one common theme throughout this thread is guys saying "on the cold days, you will need a balaclava."

What exact kind of balaclava are you guys talking about? I currently wear this one below my snowmobile helmet.

Is that kind of what you guys are talking about or are we talking about some full fleece thick thing like this one I used to use for snowskiing (before I started riding with a helmet there too.)

Am I just weak sauce to be already wearing a balaclava even in my warm snowmobile helmet?

I ride in 0 degrees and dont ever get cold, Love the venting,I generate lots a heat when mt riding, now if I were trail riding maybe however I,d take myself out with a bullet before I did that,,

That POC helmet is sweet AND I can get one for half price but they don't make it in XXL for my giant head. The multi hit impact foam is a pretty cool feature too. Nearly all helmets made with the material that looks like styrofoam are only good for one hit. The foam collapses and doesn't spring back, another hit in that area will not absorb any impact. Must be hard to throw out a $350-600 helmet that still looks fine.

Heres an interesting link that compares moto helmets to mountain bike helmets and how they protect your head differently an the different ways they test te helmets for the safety ratings.

I picked up a new fox rampage carbon this year and ill be tryin it out this season and compare it to my shoei moto helmet. The new fox rampage is te first mountain bike helmet I've felt comfortable in it fits an feels very similar to a moto helmet but lighter and more venting.

Moto

Nice find on the pinkbike article.

I have a Kali light duty MTB helmet & knee pads from them. They make solid gear if anyone is looking for a full face downhill bike helmet I'd check them out. Also they are based out of California local for me always try to support the local guys.
