Fuel???

Just a question for a few of you who have used the Silber kits in years past. I will be running one at 8lbs @ 8,000’+ and wondering what type of fuel you are using for mixing with 91?

110 Race Gas or 100 Avgas?

I’ve got a distributor locally that can get 110 for $400/55 gallon drum = $7.27 roughly/gallon

OR my buddy in Colorado buys 100AV from the local airport for $3.45/gallon

I realize I will be mixing more with Avgas but the cost is a lot cheaper, either 3 gallons of 110 or 4 gallons of 100Av…(per Corey).

No disrespect to Justin or Corey for their already very helpful info :yo:, just interested in different opinions.

Just would like to here on what others have done in the past?

I felt it ran just fine on AV last year, and plan on continuing witb it this year. I did notice a little increase in throttle response when i mixed 110 amd pump, but not much and not nearly enough to justify the $10 a gallon for it. What did Justin and Corey tell you?

They said 110, which I do agree with. The O2 sensor with be shot at the end of the season ($55)...I was just curious on how 100 AV worked.

I ran Silbers kit on my dragon for 2 years and ran straight av and 12-14lbs of boost and never had an issue with det or throttle response. I will be running straight av in my 13 as well.

100 ll is better for your 02 sensor than leaded race fuel and if you can get it that cheap Id go tat route for sure.

I am going to try some 100 unleaded te local supplier is getting in but depending on the price I may just run straight AV again.

I just want to know where your buddy is getting av that cheap.

I will ask which airport he was talking about. It was a smaller airport about 3 miles from his house in Westmininster.

I can get it here for $4.08...either way its cheaper.

My experience is with a cat, but I have run:

100% Sunoco 100
100% VP 110
100% 100LL

I did all sorts of research into fuel, and its properties, and effects on deto protection and throttle response. I could not tell a difference between the three fuels in terms of throttle response.

The distillation curve of 100LL and Sunoco 110 are nearly identical, with very high 90% and Final evap numbers. VP 110 shows much lower numbers, which should assist throttle response theoretically. I could not tell the difference.

Given your options, and prices listed, 100LL is a no brainer IMO, even if mixing. It doesn't smell as cool as race, but I'm over that!

that's what i always thought as well, but wiki shows the TEL content is 1.2-2. so lets assume an average of 1.6. reading another source shows that the maximum TEL for 100LL is 2.12

Assume 100LL octane = 1.6 TEL

VP c12 (110 octane) = 4.23 TEL

4 gal 110 @ 4.23 TEL + 6 gal 91 oct @ 0 TEL = 98.6 oct @ 1.69 TEL

so its pretty close to a wash. depending on the batch/brand/etc of 100LL you may actually be getting slightly more lead content than mixing 110.

With that said we tried mixing for a while but i think its easier to get fuel from one place rather than mix it . Also 100LL has extremely tight quality controls so it will be more consistent than any mix that involves pump. ideally you wont be on the ragged edge where that would be applicable but its something to consider

Did they seem strongly opinionated about it or just said it was the better option? When I was talking to Justin last year I got the feeling he felt unleaded race was better but wasn't concerened in the least bit with me running av.

I dont want to say "strong", just suggested better for tuning. Corey said the guys who over mix are usually better off. I dont want to put words in their mouth.

Maybe one of them can chime in and say why.

To much octane doesn't blow motors, Too little does

Some people notice a difference in throttle response but I never did.

From a shop perspective we always err on the side of caution. 70% of the turbo kits we do are 100% AV and 10-11 pounds of boost. Lots of smiles from the customers and with the avgas being so regulated the tuning stays close all the time. The % of ethanol in pump gas sold in Colorado is not consistent and could potentially change the tune of the sled depending on where you fill up. Mixing in the good stuff helps with consistency.

i ran straight av gas from 1800 ft to 5000 feet, 6 psi down low on straight av and 8 psi from 3500 feet up also av gas.
