Fuel Mileage

I'm looking to snow check a 2012 Switchback Assault. How's the fuel mileage been on the new 800's. My buddy with an e-tech says I'll use twice the fuel he does but I don't believe him. With the price of fuel it becomes important these days.

don't believe him one bit, I don't know the exact mileage but I bet on a ride you 2 are only a 1/4 gallon difference either direction.

these Pros get some of the best fuel mileage I have ever seen a sled get.

So far, I've gotten 6.32 to 7.49 MPG.
The more trail riding, the better, obviously.

I haven't ridden any super deep pow days yet..it may drop closer to 5.5-6 then?

Haven't ridden w/ any eTecs, but so far I've generally done the same or slighly better on fuel vs the Doo 800R or 800HOs that I've ridden with. However I seem to have a few extra miles on at the end of the day too...which means something...

I wouldn't doubt the Pro could do between 8-9 w/ a shorter track & lugs, and mainly trail riding. But thats just guesstimation from the numbers I'm seeing personally.

don't know what they get for fuel milege but its twice as good as the iq 800's. same goes for oil consumption.

Not true. Rode 4 days in over the hood pow and my pro used about 1/2 gallon more each day. We both ride about the same. Pro uses very little oil also. E-tec used alot more but both sled were on break-in. I would bet Pro will use less or about the same amount of oil than e-tec when they are both broke-in. I was pretty impressed. It a sipper!

as far as him getting double the mileage, that is BS

I have ridden 3 100 mile plus rides with 2 800 etecs (renegades) and 1 11 cat 800 HO (crossfire) and me on my 11 assault switchback

at the pumps at the end of the day we were all within an a few bucks of eachother

the cat was the worst but not all that different

so were all riding sleds from the same sled segment, did the same ride (few variations in climbs and such) and had similar mileage at the end of the day

If you're worried about fuel economy, a sled is about the last thing on earth you should be buying....that said a pro seems to do about the same as an e-tec.

I usually dont say negative things about people online but this is an exception.

Your buddy is an idiot.

Etecs do get better MPG by a small margin. As everyone said about 1/4 to 1/2 a gallon more fuel used during the same ride, but the Pro uses 30% less oil than the Etec and $40/gallon oil is a lot more than $5/gallon gas .

Personally I don't care about MPG because I am a mountain rider. If my sled happens to be efficient then its icing on the cake.

I never calculate the mileage because I don't think it really matters, but here's what I do know:
My carburated King Cat was about 45 miles to a tank with my terrain and riding style
My M1000 was about 50 miles to a tank
My 2010 M8 was about 65-70 miles to a tank
My 2011 Pro RMK is, well, I've yet to need to add fuel. It runs forever! I have ran it 70 hard miles and still had 2 gallons left. Also the oil consumption is easily 1/3 less than any of my Cats were.

So no hard numbers here because the actual number always depends on snow conditions for me, but comparatively it is WAY better on gas and oil than any of my Cats ever were.

I'd agree, it sure is fun to beat your buddies sled on the hill and put in less gas on the way home:face-icon-small-hap I'm using my second gallon of oil and over 400miles. very impressive compared to all sleds I've owned.

During the beginning of the season, when we had marginal snow conditions and were forced to ride more trail and off-trail was crappy hard snow, I was getting 8-9 mpg. The last three rides, when we finally got some deep snow here in WA, the mileage has dropped to 5-6 mpg. Oil consumption has been very good, though (except last ride when my oil cap was overtightened and leaked all over). But who cares, I just figure it costs me X amount of dollars for a day of sledding. A price that I am more than willing to pay for such a fun time. If only those skiers knew that it's actually cheaper to go sledding than spend half of your day sitting on a lift chair. BRRAAAAPPPPP!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I thought as much. The biggest concern about mileage is carrying extra fuel because some days we put on over 100 miles and carrying a lot of extra gas is a pain. We don't have gas stations where I go (NWT of Canada).

My concern is gone.

13.5? Wow sounds pretty good. Do you have an RMK or a SB Assault? I ride mostly off trail but have mileage concerns. I am not a Mountain rider, though, so I'm pretty sure I would do better than most of these numbers in here. I'm looking to move to maybe an RMK Assault next year but I don't want to be the first one running out of gas and getting ditched in the woods running with 600 and 800 ETECs. I'm thinking carrying 2.5 gal. and the extra gal. that the Polaris holds should be enough to save me from what I am hearing here.

i have the 2011 Pro RMK 800 155"

the 13.5 Comes from riding alot of trail that day..

Just to let you know Normally i don't ride trail..

But 13.5 is what u can get if u baby it out out the back country when low on GAS

no need to carry gas

i ride my pro rmk 155 in the mountains at 8500 feet on average. 2 to 3 miles in and out of our riding areas is also average. i quit carrying gas. just extra weight i NEVER use. usually 1/2 a tank is all we use. a buddy on a 2009 154 summit x ran out at the trailer last sturday. i took 6 gallons. its crazy good on gas and even better on oil. i pour a cup of oil in the tank at every fill up just because i get worried about no oil use. good stuff! ride a pro!

I also ski and let me tell you the adrenaline skiing thru the tree's is like no other, pretty close in my book.Pro 155 average 7-8 mpg 80 miles with room to spare, unless it's deep then less. Shouldn't need to bring much gas to ride 100 miles day.

My friend e-tec 800 is taking almost twice as fuel compared to my RMK 800 155. Same goes for oil comsomption. The 800 rmk is not thirsty I am telling you. I rarely use the spare tank on the tunnel. Just stating the facts.

My experience is 10-14mpg with some off trail, some real fast trail/lake and the rest general trail speeds on a 2011 switch/Assault.
