i live in the trees, nothing like leaving the road at 9am and not seeing it again till dark!!! you've got to be in a lot better shape to be a tree rider, not just a 1-2 minute trip up the hill you've got to want it ALL DAY!!! i used to live to ride nothing but steep, plenty of climbs around here the masses migrate to and spend the day bsing at the bottom and doing nothing but going up and down all day. it does take some skill and nerve, what goes up must come down
but what i've found that really gives you a rush is boondocking through the trees and sidehilling across the top of a 100 foot cliff, looking down is quite the thrill. then turning the thing uphill and looking for a place to crest the top. when we come to bowls now i'm looking for the best technical climb i can make that has twists and turns, no more straight up. or even better i love to cut a nice sidehill from one side to the other, spin around and head back the other way. a couple of pulls and i'm ready to head off to new places. luckily we have places here that are roadless and not wilderness so having the area mostly to ourselves is awesome. many come for a day in the trees, you'd be surprised how many peeps idea of riding in the trees is going from place to place on the trail and doing a little off trail here and there, and are totally whipped by lunch
takes a surprising amount of energy and skill to keep moving in the tight trees we have here, especially for hour after hour. but this is what gets me pumped up, i've got to be on top of my sled all the time, always carving one way or the other, picking lines all day long, constanly using my skills, banging through treewells one second then picking my way down a ridge trying to miss the drops and finding a way up the other side. not to mention all the spots we get to see in the middle of winter that very few others if any have seen or been to!!!
another thing i love is how tight you get to be with your riding buds. like i said we go out for hours into the roadless, no one else around for miles, the only ones you've got are the ones with you. no cell phone out there so you really rely on each other to get back if something bad happens. really wakes you up to the risks you are taking, you get to feel awfuly alone when your still a couple of hours from the road and its almost dark, boondocking through the trees at night is its own beast
knowing these guys would do whatever it would take to get you out if something bad happens is PRICELESS!!!
i'll take this over a huge chute any day!!!
don't you just want to roll up on one ski and see whats beyond that opening, i know i do
love the nice tight trees we have here, keeps you on your toes, carving my way through heaven...
you can't get here unless you spend a couple of hours making your own trail, but when you get there...
