Free cell phones for welfare recipients.

My new motto

Work harder, Millions on welfare are counting on you...

Just add every new program to the end of that line. So in this case: to provide free cell phone service to those who do not work.

My father had an idea 40 years ago that he believed strongly in, and I still do today. All those who are on some kind of public assistance should do some kind of public service work. Whether it be picking trash or painting ect.. Thsoe who truely need the handout will feel they have EARNED IT. Those who think this is beneath them, will GET A JOB instead!!! What a concept. Ok, off my soapbox.

Agreed. I've been in favor of that for a long time, along with required drug/alcohol testing for people on welfare.

Does anybody actually have proof this started under Obama? It's pretty ridiculous to sit there and condemn him when nobody has posted anything that proves he started this program. For all you know it was George W. Bush.

I have that as a bumper sticker with Obama pointing at you.

whats next, phones for prisioners program?

I wouldn't be surprised....you would puke if I told you the kind of things prisoners and parolees get.

.

I had heard of the cell phone welfare plan a few years back and called into AT&T mostly to vent and try and get some answer as to how can they afford to offer that program. He told me that it's partially paid for by their customers. Take a look at your phone bill, he told me that the 'Alaska Universal Service' and 'Federal Universal Service' charges are how they can afford to do that. I really didn't feel any better after the call...

I'd be happy if they had to pass a piss test to get a check, I had to pass a piss test to work my azz off.

I absolutely agree with this statement! I do as well. It would never fly because it would be deamed discriminatory. So is the fact that I must piss in a bottle to keep my job. They don't have to accept their welfare check either! their CHOICE!

My mother is 70yrs old. Raised us through the 70's & 80's giving up her career in office management for 20yrs. Went through a divorce and basically raised us on a part time work and secretaries pay along with the whopping $350 a month in child support for 3 kids. After we all left the house she changed to a job assebling circuit boards that paid better than her secretary position until about 2003 when neck pain and migrains caused her to seek medical treatment. They fused the top 3 vertibrae and 3 vertibrae in her lower back. While she can walk she cannot tilt or turn her head or lift anything over 5lbs and walks with a cain. She continiued to seek work (against doctors orders) but could find none. Prior she had a credit beacon of 820. 850 is highest and I've processed hundreds of scores a day in previous job and have seen 3 other scores close to it. (yeah it's kinda rare and it shows integrity, supposidly). She wound up loosing her house and selling all that she could to pay for her medical bills and finally had to file bankrupcty while she was waiting nearly 2yrs for her disability and housing to get approved. In the meantime she lived with my sister, her husband and 4 children. Annually she gets reviewed for income etc. She lives in income based housing, has food stamps, and recieves about $120 a month in SSI Disability, she has few options to keep her busy (quilting, knitting etc). And recently the utilities department raised their rates so she could no longer afford a land line phone. Us kids pay for her life insurance policy to cover her funeral, help out where we can. But we are all strapped due to our own circumstances. But you guys are right, she's just lazy, sits around on her azz all day and does not deserve any kind of assistance. And she doesn't deserve any kind of communication device to call for medical emergency or for us kids to check up on her. And even though that service provider is not yet available in her area, she should not be entitled to recieve $8.25 off her monthly $45 phone bill that she still can't afford.

Is this the kind of treatment we can expect in the worlds greatest country when we get old or physically unable to work? Yet other countries we say we are superior to take care of their elderly and disabled. Not all wellfare people are working the system.

whoa, back up there a minute. This is exactly what we were talking about there are those who need the beni's and this is truly an example of just what and who our system should support. I am truly sorry for your mother, and your family as it affects all of you. On the flip side of the coin, I am sure you know others that milk the system and live well and brag about it. Those are the ones that anger me. It is truly ashame that your mother has had to go through what she has in a society like ours that is supposed to pride it's self in taking care of our own. I hope you can see where we are coming from.

Ultrarider is right - there are definately people that need assistance because of disabilities, etc. But for every one person that really needs it, there's 25 that completely take advantage of the system. The rants in this thread DO NOT apply to your family's situation. I applaud her for the sacrifices she had to make to raise a family - and I hope she eventually will get the assistance that she needs to live comfortably.

I think its more the idea of it being a cell phone that riles people up.You will get some drug dealer collecting welfare with a cell phone paid for by the government.A cell phone is a total luxury item but people myself included think they cant leave the house with out it.For my grandma we got her a unit that if she fell all she had to do was push a button and it would call a few numbers and help would come better in my opinion because she wore it so always had it.

we put my mother in-law on our plan for like 10 bucks a month, we'll pay for 6 months of it then another one of ker kids will pay it for six months. So its like 5 dollars per month outta my pocket for her to have a nice cell phone with plenty of minutes.

people with some kinda dignity or integrity is the kind of people that get shafted the most, people like your mother.
