Fox Evol or Z bros x-1 shocks

No experience with the zbros, but the evol's are pretty sweet. Especially with the 2 speed compression damping, they are super adjustable.

If you are riding anywhere where the elevation or temperature vary I would stay away from the Floats. I had them on my XP last season and hated them, they were always different everytime I went out. Then its a pain to take out the pump and figure out where you need to be. I sold them and bought the Exit X1's. They are always consistent and way easier to tune. Just turn the dial on the shock itself. I would say the Zbroz are the only way to go with $1000+ shocks.

I haven't had Floats before, but this year I am running a ZBroz set-up on my Gade. They look and feel amazing, and very, very strong. I got mine from Ian at Monster Performance; the link is in my sig. I recommend going with the ZBroz set-up.

Zbroz..

I got a full set of ZBroz X-1 last year for my XP - couldn't be happier.
Flawless.

They do weigh a bit more than the Floats, but are very consistent.

Be sure to get the mfg some good lead time - they get busy and forget to ship things.

Good product though.

I run a pair of float x on my M8 and I really liked them for awial and then one of them blew out when I was in a really bad spot. I didnt hit any thing, the shock just lost all its air. So I filled the shock back up and once I put pressure on it all the air was gone.I rode out with one shock slammed all the way down. It sucked ***! Got them rebuilt and now they just feel weird, and inconsistent. Dont get me wrong I have run fox for years from my race sled to my mountain bike they make great stuff. I love the tech. behind the float shocks but they can fail, but I guess anything can fail if you put it through the ropes.

I personally have not tryed, but the three stage shock makes alot of since and I dont think they will ever blow out. I would go with the Zbros. Almost all of the pro hillclimbers use them, I think that says alot about the quality of the products. If they work for them blasting the hell out of the day to day, race to race. They would lost for a hell of a long time blasting pow days in the backcountry. Hope that helps...

i to have floats and hate them. have had them revalved and better till the back one chit the bed. then just air pressure left, can you say gay! i'll be ordering z-bros this summer if anyone want floats pm me! 08 nytro. timberskid suspension.

Wow, I've never heard anyone that didn't like Floats. I have the Fox Float Evol R's. I love them. They are so much better thant he stock WE's I had. I like the rebound adjustability. Allows me to change my rebound for the ride up the bumpy road and then soften them up for the powder. I can't compare to Z Bros as I've never had them, but the Fox shocks are great IMO.

I would got with the Fox EVOL X shocks, They are better imo, just because of the adjustability. I LOVE mine!

I ran the Evol X's last season on my XP and loved them once I got them dialed properly. I also have just the normal Floats on my mod and the combination of a super light sled and the Floats work flawless.
With that being said, The Exit shocks, calibrated right, are absolutely amazing. Very very nice. Probably nicer than the Floats with both of them calibrated properly. The Floats take a bit to get dialed...but once you do.....it's basically a matter of price and personal preference.
Exit's if you want to bolt and ride. Have something that not too many people do.
Floats if you want a lighter, sometimes cheaper, but need some tweaking to get working for your personal preference.

Sorry to hear some guys have had their Floats crap out. That would suck.

The question was Fox Evol (which means R or X) vs Axiss. Simple basic floats weren't even in the equation (and shouldn't be!) This was my first season on the Fox Evol X shocks and while it took me a bit to learn how to adjust them once you have your preferences of the day figured out they are awesome! I think I'd go R's if I had to buy another set. The X is kind of like having a Ferrari but having to maintain the speed limit all of the time.

You probably had moisture trapped in your shock that was freezing and giving you an inconsistent ride. Air will do that no matter where it comes from especially if you use an air compressor to do the initial fill in your shock.
I know Fox includes an AIR pump with the shocks, but if you read the owners manual, they recommend nitrogen because it won’t carry moisture like air does.
Of course not everybody has a bottle of nitrogen laying around, you might check with your local dealer or repair shop (especially one that specializes in shock work) have them fill your shocks with nitrogen. Then you can use your air pump to make the smaller adjustments.
I see that you already sold yours, but I wanted to reply to your post for others with the same issue.
As far as leaky shocks go (somebody else commented on this) 99% of the time it's the schrader valve (air valve) that is not seated properly or tight enough. Remove the whole valve (3/8" nut) and put a dab of grease on the o-ring. Also make sure that the valve core is tight enough. Unless the shaft is damaged, it's pretty rare for air to leak from the seal between the shaft and body since there is a series of multiple seals inside that would all have to be bad for air to make its way out.

Elevation has no effect because the shock is pressurized and sealed. The shock is not open to atmospheric air.

The air spring can be more consistent then steel springs which can fatigue over time or not correctly spec by the mfg. Most race car teams carry spring testers with them so that they can match and confirm the spring rate.

Gas filled coil over shocks will also lose pressure over time and should be serviced like any shock.

To answer the original question I would go with company you feel most comportable with their customer service or best represenation in your area. Carls Cycle, Holz, Toms, etc for the Fox and Zbroz direct, fastrax, others? for the Exits.

I have not found any shock set-up that works as consistant as Exit/Z Broz.
If you are visiting Bend, you can take a look at some of my EXIT Shocks, I am also a dealer for Z-Broz and use thier product exclusively on my custom builds.
I have used the Fox, they are great as well but in poor snow conditions, I feel the EXITs are easier to maintain a line and stay pointed in the direction of your own choosing.

I have the Yami Float X's and really like them. Worlds better than regular Floats. It took a little while to figure out the right rebound and compression damping for trail riding/jumping but once you get the adjustments figured out they work great.
