found riders at Van epps

They were found by a small group of riders looking for them, I don't think SAR has the equipment to get in there. Hopefully they can post the details for others to learn from.

there is something to be learned from this and I have learned it also DON"T FOLLOW TODD!!!:face-icon-small-hap:

The SAR Sherriff told me that the chopper that was being called in to look for them could pick up the signal from the avalanche beacon. We were sitting on Van Epps pass when the chopper was communicating back and forth with the Sheriff about this.

I know that one of the guys that dropped in to find them was on that Mod purple tunnel Ski-Doo. Later talking to him, he said the it was very deep down where they were at.

Great news they were found ok.

yes they spent the night

I talked to Todd this morning, all is well, went down the wrong ravine back by scatter creek, 1 ridge to far north. The weather socked in on them and they had virtually no visability and than darkness set in. Sounds like they did the right thing by digging in for the night and making a fire, they figured by morning the weather would break. A group of guys found them and helped them out I guess., Sounds like a few guys were not the best riders and had to have some help getting their sleds back up the hill.

Actually Mike, not following me was the problem, couple of the guys were convinced we were on the right ridge to drop out to the Fish Lake road. Obviously not the case.
By the time it was clear that we were headed the wrong direction the clouds blew in as well as the dark. One in our party was having fatigue and hip issues and another had an asthma attack and had left his inhaler in the truck.
So we decided to dig in, start a fire, and wait until morning to turn around and head out. Not lost, just turned around and no way to contact the outside world. (Ordered a sat phone this morning)

Words of advice would be to think about spending the night on the mountain and what you would need to survive. No matter how good the rider or their knowledge of the terrain, a simple mechanical failure or other issue could leave you stranded. Thank god a few of us were prepared.
I have been riding 40 of my 43 years and this is the first snow camping event I have encountered and hopefully my last.
Thanks to Kenny, Don, and Dave as well as the rest of the peeps looking for us yesterday. We owe you guys some gas.

Todd

I trust ya Todd and I would definately listen to you over many others, from my experience with them I know what you mean. was a couple hrs of frustration of knowing I should be up there but I have never ridden there and knew kenny and dave were up there already and new about where you guys were. it was noon when I got a call and everybody I know that know's the area was already looking. I learned alot and I wasn't there. my wife and I talked about a few things that I need to do for that kind of sutuation.

no purple tunnel sled involved????

Don't worry about the gas. We were happy to help. Its weird because that is the only time that I have ever packed gas, came in real handy. Those cats were real thirsty... Glad everyone was ok and it was nice meeting you guys.
