Ford F-350 6.0 is killing my pocketbook

decided to give the truck one last chance. My buddies and I are pulling the cab on it this week and installing the ARP head studs ourselves. Heard every different argument with the egr cooler. I am throwing a coolant filter on and since the cooler is brand new right now I am going to leave it. Should be a fun project. Never pulled a cab on any kind of truck before.

Well I got done installing the ARP head studs myself wednsday night with a couple of buddies. Started on Tues evening and we pulled the cab off the truck in about 3 hours and then wedsnday we pulled the stock head bolts one by one and replaced with the ARP head studs and torqued them up to 210 ft/lbs. Drop the cab back on the frame and got it back up and running again by about 4 wednsday afternoon. No leaks codes or problems. I had never pulled a cab before or worked on this truck at all so i was a little nervous going into it but it actually was not too bad. So hopefully the head gasket issue will be solved now.

I have worked on more 6.0l than I care to mention. There are 4 big issues in the order of importance.

1st
EGR valve and cooler. This will lead to 95% of your problems with coolant and head gasket. The reasons for this as your trucking down the road pulling 10k your exhuast temp are around 800 degrees. You have that 800 degree exhaust going thru the EGR cooler witch is cooled by coolant. So coolant boils over at 250 Degrees give or take, and you have 800 degree exhaust sitting next to it. What do you think will happen? Say by, by to your coolant. After this happens now you’re pulling 10k load with no coolant and your motor over heats and take out your head gaskets. Everyone says it the head gaskets fault no it’s the EGR valve and cooler. Every truck that I work on gets the EGR delete for now. In till they get back to the mandatory emissions test.

2. Head gasket these are mostly related to EGR but if you have a tuned/chipped truck and pull or hot rod it you will have Head gasket issues. You can bet money on it.

3. Injector
Change your oil every 3,000 miles. Not 4 not 5 every 3,000 miles. People may not realize this but your engine oil drives these injectors and the passages in them are small. Less then .005 in some points. If you have dirty oil it will clog this and give you drivability issues. Run 5w30 year round in these truck it wont hurt a thing if you change it every 3,000 miles. It's very cheap insurance compared to 200 for one injectors.

4. Turbo and its vanes this one is a small issue but if you are having issues with cold drivability and no boost the turbo needs to come off and get the vanes cleaned its an easy job to do but it does take some time. I have never nor could I every see the turbo vanes leading to head gasket issues. The turbo can not drive the drive pressure up that high to give you head gasket issue. If it went that high it would float the valves and cause valve to piston damage. (Read new engine)
