Ford F-350 6.0 is killing my pocketbook

2005 F-350 6.0
January 09--4 injectors warranty thankfully
August 09--tranny $3000 at 60k
Jan 10--2 weeks out of warranty egr cooler, oil cooler and head gaskets

Dont know how much longer I can keep running this thing. Last trip out west blew up my sled on the second day. Luckily I brought a spare set of pistons along and had the sled up and running in 3 hours. Didnt think it could get any worse. Then on the way home started loosing coolant in the truck but made it home. Dropped it off at the dealer and waited for the good news which started with the 5yr 100k mile warranty ran out 2 weeks ago. Luckily my buddy works at the dealer and is getting me out of there for only $1100 and another $400 to put in ARP head studs in case I keep this thing. Dont know if I can trust this truck any longer. Thinking about going to a Dodge/Chevy. Just dont know after fixing these last issues I should keep it praying the issues are over or is it a ticking time bomb till the next round. Truck only has 66k on it.

With the ARP head studs half of your problem is fixed. Also put on a EGR delete kit, then you will be set. The 6.0 will blow head gaskets all day long without the headstuds and EGR delete done to them. After those two things are done, you should have no problems with the 6.0 (its tough to justify these when you have warranty, but now that you are out of warranty, get them done).

When ford does headgaskets do they have a ford warrenty update on headstuds or would you have to specifically ask to get the arp studs. I am asking because I took mine in for a new tranny and when I picked it up they said they replaced headgaskets as well. Really ticked me off because I knew I needed the ARP ones.

I work in a ford dealership in the parts dept, I will tell you now if it is under warranty we have to use all ford parts if not and you bring in your own parts ford will not warranty the work.

Don't lose faith in the 6.0 liter sounds like you bout got the bugs worked out of it now and they are very good engines

probaly because everyone lost faith in them and got rid of them before the bugs were worked out. And besides that we took the only diesel tech they had, he works here now! LOL
Don't get me wrong it is a PITA to have a new truck broke down all the time but if you can get past 100000 miles they are usally pretty good to go

I did no service coordination at a Ford store for a little while. The 6.0 is decent so long as you don't chip it etc. Unlike the 7.3 which was detuned to something like 60% of the engine's potential the 6.0 came tuned at something like 95% which does not leave much room for error. If you start to loose coolant on a 6.0 it is best to stop and call someone to come get you. If you continue to drive it has a high probability of burning up the inter-coolers. Once this happens it is not cheap and Ford does not have to warranty it cause you continued to drive it. I saw this also happen to a new 6.4 and from what I gather this is an option for them but I did not ever see them decline warranty coverage but the possibility was always there and I don't know what grounds ford would reject the warranty.

Also you may want to buy and change your fuel filters yourself. You would probably be surprised that you can do it for far less. Once you do it, it is not bad even though the bottom filter can be tricky. If I remember correctly some guys were finding both filters for $30 a pair and we were charging $40 each. By the time you added oil change and labor associated with changing the filters the bill is over $200. I saw guys change the oil and fuel filters for about $60 in their driveway. Also keep an eye on the air filters on that thing.

I change the fuel filters regulary at 15k miles. I had a mild tune on the truck and always drove it easy but i think I will stick with bone stock from now on and pray it does not have anymore issues for the time being. Spoke with Ford customer service over the phone about the truck only being 2 weeks out of warranty but 34k miles under the 100k limit and they basically said we will not cover it under warranty because of the 2 weeks and good luck.

Gooooood for the repair business. One coming in for head gaskets, another coming for new motor, just this week. Only 11,400 for a complete Ford re-man. Seems like I get one a week for something. They keep the toy account full;)

I just traded my 2005 Lariat 6.0 in on a Chevy Silverado Duramax LTZ. My Ford 6.0 warranty expired just before I traded it and I was afraid it was going to break me if I had to keep it. In the last three years there has been almost 50 grand worth of warranty repairs and the truck was in the shop almost every month with motor issues. (I am not exaggerating!) Ford actually told me they should have just bought it back from me if they had to know what it was going to cost them. Injectors, EGR Cooler three times, numerous EGR Valves , Both Clinder heads, head gasket done four times, two turbos, two fuel injection control modules.....and the list goes on. I offered to buy the ARP head studs but my dealer would not install them! They had the cab off the truck so many times the cab mounts wore out! I pity the guy who buys this truck off the lot!

By far my worst vehicle I have EVER owned!! Good luck with yours! I hope you have better luck than I did and sorry for the rant!

I will never say I will not have another Ford as my 7.3 was bulletproof but until Ford gets some tried, tested and true miles on their new 6.7L....it will be Duramax for me all the way.

That what I keep thinking could happen with me and the truck continue to take my money. Thinking about going to the Chevrolet dealer and seeing what they will give me for my truck or just selling it myself and picking up a dmax.

Just dont know how resale is with these trucks and the issues. It is an 05 lariat crew cab long box with 66k and the paint and interior is almost perfect. Dont know if they are going well below blue book because of the problems they have. I just paid the truck off and dont want a truck payment again and have not been to any dealers before looking for a straight trade. Do any dealers take straight trades?

Just FYI....I had three different trade in quotes from three different dealers. I have the exact same truck as you, 05 Lariat Crew Long box full load with extras. The quotes ranged from as low as $13500.00 to a high of $24000.00. I went with the offer of $24000.00. All the dealer does is not give you as much of a discount off the vehicle your buying and make it look good on paper. It just feels good now coming out in the morning and knowing the truck (Chevy D-Max) will start without piles of smoke and rattle!

Good luck with your decison! :beer;

That is pretty ****ty of your dealer/Ford for not getting a known problem covered only 2 weeks out of warranty.....

You can still get a headgasket job done on warranty from Toyota in a 1989 pickup because it was a known problem.....

my friend had the same truck ...that thing was at least once a month at the dealership for repairs ,finally he got tired of losing time and money(that was hes work truck) he basically told ford to come and get the truck ...and they did .he drives a Chevy now.

my buddy works at a diesel repair shop and is a 6.0 specialist. all he has worked on over the last year is 6.0s. he said he hasnt billed a pickup out with egr problems (which is 90 percent of them) that has been under fifteen hundred bucks. you either gotta get rid of it or delete the egr stuff.

Man I am going to Dodge tommorrow and cancel my order on the 2010 HD Cummins. I gotta get me one of them there Fords.

FORD spelled backwrds is DROF and that stands for:D

Everything I have read and researched on the 6.0, is due to modding them, the problems seem to start. Leave them stock and they seem to do ok. Also, running them hard with 15k lbs behind them will affect them as well. Not saying it is right tho, that is for sure

I have a 02 f350 with a 7.3, 115k miles on it, never been in the ship except for CPS recall

My dad bought a 03 with a 6.0, nver has been in for a warranty related issue with the motor, it has 146k miles on it.

I have heard that you either get a good one, or a bad one, no in between.

We are doing a 4 inch exhaust with a 3.5 inch DP and removing the cat, no other mods

The EGR delete, does this help with head gastket failure?

The issues are nothing to do wit modding them. We have a Ford dealer and a GM Dealer. I sell both brands.

The issue with FORD EGR and head gaskets are the vanes in the variable pitch turbo. The vanes stick in the high boost position and pressurize the engine blowing the head gaskets. It's like the ramps on an old Polaris primary. The part of the ramp that gets contact all the time stays nice and clean and shiny. The rest of the ramp gets corrosion. When it's needed, it's hard for the turbo vanes to get back off of the corroded part of the assembly.
