Ford Eco vs. Diesel

Best suggestion try before you buy - I tried all 3 brands three different times. Narrowed down to two then have the dealer let you tow and pull a hill then decide, they all have the positives and negatives.

My dad just bought a 2012 Ecoboost, I'm gonna try towing my trailer with it this winter .... you never know, I might just trade the Dodge I just bought in on the ecoboost.

Haha you're just sore Bout your mileage. That ho cummins will blow the doors off the Eco. Period.
Btw I like the Eco but not a fair comparison especially if you have a big trailer.

IDK, we'll see that F150 ecoboost is a damn nice truck ..

The only thing I dont like about it is the name and the logo.

I mean for f*cks sake, it has the phrase "eco" in it and a f*cking green tree leaf on the badge? WTF? Why can't we call it something normal like "power boost" or "turbo boost" or even like "Happy Fun Boost" and not put a f*cking picture of a green leaf on it that just looks beyond retarded?

Thats the only thing not to like about the truck honestly.

And they look like a$$. :face-icon-small-ton

No I don't have money to burn. If I did I wouldn't be asking these questions.

You nailed it- how important is it to tow effortlessly?

Actually a good way to put it into prospective. Thanks

Miles towing
Miles highway not towing
Miles city not towing
Misc miles

Problem is most my miles are towing. So my numbers were almost tied between the diesel and the eco boost and 40 dollar extra for my current V10 per week. Lot less then a payment.

Man this sucks I bought my Ford V10 July of 98. After 13 years I thought I was due. Maybe I need another year or two. Has never seen the shop and only oil changes. Best truck I every own.:baby:

For what its worth Buz..... I have owned 3 V-10 Fords ( 1999, 2000 and a 2008) I still have the 2000 and use it for plowing. All of them have been trouble free but use a ton of fuel. I decided this year to buy the ecoboost after driving several of my customers trucks ( Im a Mechanic and have a local shop ). I am like you, I wanted something that pulls effortlessly but could not justify the diesel and wanted a more comfortable ride like a half ton. Now my 2008 V-10 Pulled way better then my other two v-10s due to the 3 Valve motor and 4.11 Gears but still was hard on fuel. All I can say since I bought my eco is that I would never go back to any of fords or anyone elses gas motors for towing. My ecoboost has impressed me for sure. I have a 27FT camper that weighs 7200 loaded and it rocks it down the road like nothing I have ever owned. Empty my HWY MPG has been consistent at 21 if im not always playing with the turbos and drive like a human. My milage with my camper has been between 10-12 but it always has power on tap to pass someone or pull a hill and I dont have to tach it out like my v-10s to do it. Only downfall to the ecoboost is downhill towing on steep grades because the v-6 dont have much holdback but if you shift it manually its very manageable. Anyway hope this helps, I love the truck so far and dont regret my decision one bit. Now if your pulling 9000 plus LBS you will run out of suspension on the eco and I would go diesel.

air bags.

The newer F150's are basically 3/4 ton trucks ....

I wish I'd had gone and test drove one a couple months ago before buying the diesel, its sort of dawned on me the diesel was way overkill.

You can get 4.10s in the FX4. Sorry but I think the Ecoboost makes the V10 look silly. Drive an 02 V10 at work frequently. No comparison.

I like the F350 diesel and looked at it, but at $12k more then the Ecoboost, you best be towing a lot and towing over 8k. Just my 2 cents.

You trying to sell it or drive it?

That Black Dodge looks sick, you made the right decision.

I test drove them all....Cummins, Ford, Duramax, Ecoboost, Tundra....the Ecoboost just didn't seem like it had much punch. The Tundra seemed way more powerful in comparison. I chose the Duramax to ensure I wasn't going to be wanting for more truck. I plan on buying a toyhauler in the next year or two and didn't want to be limited. If you are only pulling 7k or so and not doing it regularly, I'm sure the eco would be fine. But, I LOVE my Duramax. The combination of the motor and the Allison tranny is a functioning work of art. The way those work together makes a huge difference, bigger than what can be explained....you just have to go tow with one to see the advantages.

Now I have to figure out what tires and wheels. What is the largest radius and width wheel and tire you can go before you have to do the 2" lift?

Have to agree on the length of distance towing played a big part in my decision too. My 1/2 ton suburban towed the 27' trailer fine around town. Sure it wasn't fast and had to make sure brakes on the trailer were working great, but it worked and around town and short distances it was fine. However, being from MN and driving 900-1100 miles to real snow, it's a workout cutting across I-80 or I-90 at 80mph that I wouldn't do in the suburban. I picked up the 2011 f250 with the 6.7 and couldn't be happier. Last thing I needed when driving that far was increased fatigue just trying to keep the truck straight fighting the winds across SD.

Towing goes beyond power, for me, it was the power combined the stability and how sure footed the f250 was with the 6000-8000lb trailer hooked up to it. I put the goodyear duratrac tires on it for traction. In doing so, I lost a few mpg but the added traction is beyond worth it. Empty 75mph i get about 18 mpg and towing the 27' trailer loaded with sleds/great, same speed, I get about 12 mpg.

You trying to sell it or drive it?

Just stating how happy I am with the truck.

Love it and the towing power.

Yes the diesels tow great and run hard. Just a matter of cost and if you can justify the additional buy in cost and rough ride.

Former diesel owner who loves his Ecoboost.

Hey Glen when you tow that enclosed with your eco hows the rearend squat? You have to run a equalizer hitch? Also how the truck handle wind gusts?

I own a 11 Eco and it is very impressive towing. I put airbags in it and it handles my 29 ft enclosed without an issue. I also use a stabilizer hitch. I average around 10 mpg depending on wind. You would have to pull a lot more than a sled trailer IMHO to own a diesel for the difference in price and ride.

I don't run an equalizer hitch.

I've towed the 3 place enclosed in a lot of wind and a similar 4 place as pictured and it seemed fine to me. Like I said, my truck weighs 6100 pounds. A couple hundred pounds more then an 02 Chevy 2500 6.0 we have at work. The Ecoboost blows the doors off the Chevy powerwise and feels just as planted towing.

I currently have airbags and usually run 20ish pounds in them to level it with eclosed trailer or two dirt bikes in the back. Airbags make the truck feel a lot better and well worth it IMO. Couldn't really tell the difference in ride unloaded either.

But the first pic is the truck with a 4 place enclosed, no leveling kit and no air bags.

2nd pic is airbags and leveling kit with 3 sleds inside.

For me it was like an extra 12-13k to get into a similarly equipped Duramax or Powerstroke. Couldn't justify it and couldn't be happier with the Ecoboost.

Planning on hauling a 32' 5th wheel next summer, also have sled deck so 1 ton deisel was the only way to go. Also my 06 Cummins brought 10k more than a gasser when I went to trade in/sell. I got 25k where a gasser same year and layout was at 15k.

I was having thoughts about trading in the Super Duty until I looked at the price on an Eco-Boost !!! $48k for a 1/2 ton ??? AUSM ??? >>>>.

I honestly thought about trading the Duramax in on a gasser, but after I went and drove a few, I just couldn't do it. The fun factor just wasn't there for me. I get out of the diesel with a grin, and the gasser just doesn't do that. It felt too much like a car. I like the rougher ride of the 3/4 ton, and the power, and tq of the diesel is just so much more fun.

I was thinking about it, just because of the gas mileage, and diesel fuel is so high right now. Ended up getting EFI live, and now I'm getting between 18-20 mpg around town empty. I can live with that. My buddy did the tunes for me, and it's the same one as he put on his truck. He's getting around 14 pulling a 34' 5th wheel. If I'm even close to that, I'll be very happy.
