Ford Eco vs. Diesel

Call me crazy but what do you think of the ecoboost versus diesel? I only put on 1000 miles a year so it's hard to justify a diesel. Other then power. Towing a 27ft enclosed. Thoughts?

Last year a friend bought a platinum with an eco boost, I bought the same truck with a 6.2.... Pulling the same trailer with gear ect ect he is $10-12 more at the pump everytime.. He is actually discussing trading it on a new platinum with a 6.2..... I would have a diesel but for day to day driving it does not make sense for me.

I tried eco out but didn't like the way the half ton truck handled pulling trailer so went with diesel.Waiting for bigger eco in superduty.

Well I tried the eco, I don't think the performance matches the hype. I will not be getting the eco boost. Plan and simple V6 performance trying to over achieve. Now my next issue which diesel? I will start another post.

I rode in and drove an ecoboost and i was not expecting much. I was suprised at how much power it actually did have. It also had an edge chip on it and ran way good with that. Now dont get me wrong, its definatly no diesel so towing a 27ft enclosed it probably wouldnt be that impressive, but we had to tow a friends car home on a car trailer and i was impressed with how it handled that car on the trailer. I never would have thought that a gas truck could pull a trailer like that. so i guess if it were me and all i had to do was light towing i would go with an ecoboost and if i were towing big enclosed trailers up mountains, you cant beat a diesel!

1000 miles a year and you are considering a diesel? You must have way to much money.

Funny.

- how important is it to tow effortlessly, for you
- unless money is no object, calculate this:
Miles towing
Miles highway not towing
Miles city not towing
Misc miles

Assign a mpg value to each one, fuel price, then do the math.

Do the same using values from any other truck, and compare.

May also want to figure in purchase price because I heard there are some really good deals on gas engine trucks, non-turbo.

No I don't have money to burn. If I did I wouldn't be asking these questions.

You nailed it- how important is it to tow effortlessly?

Actually a good way to put it into prospective. Thanks

Problem is most my miles are towing. So my numbers were almost tied between the diesel and the eco boost and 40 dollar extra for my current V10 per week. Lot less then a payment.

Man this sucks I bought my Ford V10 July of 98. After 13 years I thought I was due. Maybe I need another year or two. Has never seen the shop and only oil changes. Best truck I every own.:baby:

DIESEL

Diesel says it all, half ton gasers get about half the job, its like puting a hitch on a car, just looking for a good ride but they are dam good for hauling 2 or 3 bags of trash to the dump grounds 4 bags would make it sag or sway, so dont do more than 3 bags,

How much weight do you tow? Pretty sure a brand new Eco will tow anything your 98 V10 will. And probably better!!!

You guys are nuts. I came off an 03 Cummins with Smarty, intake, exhaust, tranny work, etc. Had an 01 Cummins 6 speed with 100 hp injectors, EDGE, intake and exhaust prior.

I love my Ecoboost. No regrets at all. I have a 2011 FX4 Supercrew with 3.73s. Even have larger 275/70R18 BFG ATs and leveling kit.

Mine tows a 4 place enclosed with ease. No complaints at all. Honestly I towed the same trailer with my buddies stock 05 Duramax and couldn't really tell much difference. Ecoboost runs maybe 500 more RPM but thats about it.

The Cummins felt a little more planted at first, but I put the Firestone airbags on now I don't notice much difference.

My Ecoboost weighs 6100 lbs, so its not light by any means.

I have about 2000 miles towing out of the 8000 miles on my truck, and it has never dissapointed me. 1500 is towing a 3 or 4 place enclosed.

Fuel mileage is good IMO. I have been getting 17-19 MPG with 2 dirt bikes in the back most of the summer.

Was getting around 11-12 MPG towing the enclosed.

My Cummins would maybe at best get 1-2 MPG better towing. Maybe the same or a little worse empty.

The best part, gas is 3.64 and diesel is 4.02 right now. Don't get me wrong, I love diesels, but until they stop f*cking us over on fuel it ain't worth it. Especially the when you consider the 10-12k initial buy in.

Also, I've ridden in several V10s and 8.1s and the Ecoboost blows their doors off. Not even comparable. Ecoboost tows real similar to stock older diesel IMO.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the posts - Its been a hard decision. I think the the eco boost is a great truck. But after hooking up the trailer, I just felt more comfortable with the F350 diesel. The eco was comparable to my V10 for power but I think needs 4:11 gears (only 3.73 available). It just felt small and was pushed around. If I didn't get the diesel I would have keep my truck.

, its like puting a hitch on a car, ,
Bingo !!! That's the exact saying we have at my shop !! !/2 tons are just a car with a 6' bed !!! >>>>. Whatever you buy please keep this in mind. Buy More Truck than you Need and Tow Safe !!!! >>>>. Good Choice on the new truck. Enjoy it !!!!

You can get 4.10s in the FX4. Sorry but I think the Ecoboost makes the V10 look silly. Drive an 02 V10 at work frequently. No comparison.

I like the F350 diesel and looked at it, but at $12k more then the Ecoboost, you best be towing a lot and towing over 8k. Just my 2 cents.

Towing an enclosed 1 or 200 miles is one thing. You can maybe get by with a half ton. We run 800 miles one way in sometimes bad head or side winds. I am glad every time we tow and I have my one ton dually d-max. Is it overkill? Maybe with a small enclosed but we run a 40 foot gooseneck and it is a dream to pull. No one ever said that sledding is a cheap sport.

My dad just bought a 2012 Ecoboost, I'm gonna try towing my trailer with it this winter .... you never know, I might just trade the Dodge I just bought in on the ecoboost.
