For $.50 a day...

Just watched the 3rd commercial today about saving the children in Africa for a measly $.50 a day. Now me being sick and being a debby downer, I thought about how this could be a bad thing. Saving lives, of course is good. BUT then I thought, what are these children going to do with their lives which are saved?
Are they going to go to school? are they going to make something of themselves? Are they going to be happy? Will they be able to have families and be able to support said families?

All these things seem doubtful, which leads me to thinking what is the point of keeping these people on the brink of life if it is a terrible life to life? Isn't this terrible? I can't say I would want someone to feed me just enough food so I can sit on my @ss and be barely alive.

To make this better, I thought why don't we move manufacturing that we have done in Asian countries to Africa? I'm sure it would be cheaper, and I'm sure it would not only save lives, but give people lives worth living.

The biggest issue with Africa is that life is cheap. They see death everywhere. Always. It makes it easier to fight each other constantly as they are numb to it from a very young age. Moving any business onto that continent is a sure risk as their is so much upheaval and war. My uncle is from a Dutch tea plantation family in South Africa and he has memories of bodies laying on the side of the road like we see squirrels and raccoons.

Problem number two is the corruption. We think we have problems in America? What I can assure you is that the corrupt here pale in comparison to what goes on in Africa. Donations rarely get to the intended individuals. My work in donating medical supplies to Africa were through personal contacts and using our own transport containers so that we knew where our stuff was.

So as a short answer to your question, there is no simple answer. Certainly work makes it better, but until they get to a place of more civilized treatment of each other there is a long road ahead...

The other point I am making(at let me say this now before someone complains this is simply theoretical and all things said are to create discussion) is to take some of the money for food and such and to create these jobs. This not only creates better lives for the people, but also will most likely reduce the total head count in Africa. And to be frank, the overpopulation is the cause of lives being considered cheap. There is just too many people for such sparse resources!

most of those charities only give 5 cents on the dollar to anyone but their executives.
the CEO of save the children makes 1.5 million and has a rolls royce/driver and housing (penthouse ) is provided . Some charrity !

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't feel bad about not donating to these things. I'd rather improve things at home and I want my dam government to improve infrastructure around here too! I don't care if Iraq has good bridges when 1/2 of all bridges in the USA are outdated

Those kids don't see a penny of that. I'd bet on it.

Instead, why don't the American people donate to American kids who need help, homeless veterans, people that lost their jobs and homes because of Hope and Change. I know I help out where I can, whether it be money or food. Even when I was unemployed there people way less fortunate as I. I didn't have the money but I had cans of food. Tried to donate some elk but they wouldn't take it.

I used to donate to these SCAMS thru my businesses. That and a lot of other BS like big advertising etc. I now give all that money and more to the local communities that support my business in the form of youth activities, be it camps, sports clubs, school year books, other school activities like after prom and graduation parties, anywhere money will be spent on the betterment of OUR youth. Take a kid fishing, hunting, sledding, to a game, whatever, but get kids involved. I pay my fair share of taxes and if you look at the entitlement programs in this country, I feel I am already doing my part in the big picture. I understand poor suppressed people in other countries need help to, but I hear too many incidents of grain rotting in port terminals and supplies being sold off because of corrupt govt. officials and the aid never gets to the people that need it and that is a BIG turn off.

PS. I will NEVER quit spending money on sled stuff, guns and ammunition! Maybe taxes thou.
I forgot another VERY important donation. SAWS and BRC.

PJ did you get hacked?

Here is what I have never been able to wrap my head around. If life is so bad over there why dont they just leave the area for somewhere better? You dont have a job, you live in a shack and have no responsibilities, pack up the little bit of crap you own and start walking till you get somewhere thats better. Take a little bit of ownership over your situation and fix your own problems.

Just like this country and all the people that claim to be unable to find jobs, you can't be looking real hard if you cant find work.

I'm sure you people have seen the comercial about for so much a day you can save cats and dogs? Its all over the tv these days. i always say feed the dogs and cats to the starving and problem solved.I know thats bad but i do say it.

Hahaha!!! Sad part is I think it costs more to save the critters then the people.

Sam Kinnison had a great routine about that topic. They are living in sand. Nothing grows in sand. Move to where the food is. It is on youtube.

Also, Richard Jeni had a great routine about saving starving kids in Africa also, on his 2005 HBO special.
