food for a broke college kid

50.00 a week? HAHA I assume your not an economics major . You would starve to death on that.

i probably only spend less then 50 on food for me a week. my son eats more then i do.

but the whiskey every night is a little more then that:face-icon-small-dis

Ramen and Peanut butter and jelly or honey sandwiches, got me thru college on a budget and any lean times since.

I just got a house, so I wont have to eat on the gross and overpriced food plan anymore whilst at college. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on things that could be made that are cheap, AND that are also nutritious(trying to stay in good shape). I am definitely planning on hard boiling eggs so I can eat those as snacks(and they have lots of protein for muscle growth), and making large pots of chili with bags of dried beans and maybe making my own soup and such. Does anyone have any additional wisdom they would like to share? I'd like to keep my budget under 50$ a week including any drinking which might be done :face-icon-small-win

I think I saw the tail-end of a news story the other night about that. I am certiain the reporter was trying to feed a family of 4 on $50 a week. I'll see if I can dig it up.

why don't you tell taco time you will eat there stuff three times a day through college and lose 50 pounds and they will sponsor you....

No. Just poor the liquor into the brita container. It has the charcoal filter in it. The liquor passes through the filter. Dripping a little bit out at a time. Once all the liquor has filtered through the filter, you drink it!! Enjoy the better quality!!

This is genius! Ill try it!

You are too young to drink so that should save you lots of money or risk getting caught and have your drivers license suspended which will save you gas money. Enough cop preaching, beg for family leftovers at holiday's. The ham bone with some extra ham makes great ham and bean soup cheap. Peanut butter on wheat toast is a good breakfast staple. I think Sioux Falls has some day old bread stores to stock up on bread items which you can freeze, If you find a good buy on milk freeze the extra's. Learn to fish there are some ponds along highway 14 outside of Brookings and interstate lake South of Brookings that used to have good northern populations. Chunked up northerns with a bag of frozen stirfry veggies makes great stir fry. Beef is usually expensive but pork can be bought cheap. You can find pork shoulder roasts on sale for $1.25 a pound. put it in a crockpot for the day, tear it apart with a fork and add bbq sause for pulled pork sandwiches. Find a used cheap gas grill. Cut up onions, green peppers ect are great on the grill. Cut up sweet potatoes in steak fry sections brush with olive oil and grill (cheap tasty and good for you). Potatoes are a cheap staple which can be cooked or added to dishes in many ways including making chowder with your fish. Hang with some buddies who like to hunt and have farm land. Ask to go along and offer to help on the farm. Lots of opportunities for pheasant, deer and waterfowl. Lots of goose hunting opportunities in the NE part of SD with high bag limits and few who like eating sky carp you may be able to score extra geese. If all else fails look for road kills (I would suggest ony wintertime).

$50 a week is gonna be tough to have a truly healthy and balanced diet, I would budget for $70….and you can kiss $70 goodbye if you also want booze on top of your food. I stop at the grocery store to pick up some stuff for a nights supper and I never get out of there under $40. We have a family of 5 (dad, mom a 9 yr, 5 yr and 3 yr old) and we spend about $1000 a month on groceries (not including beer or wine). We do eat very good meals, and we could get by on less than that, but nutrition is important in our home, heck we spend more than $50 a week on fruits and veggies alone. I think at your age it’s important to work on your nutrition because if you start out with a ****ty diet it will be much harder for you to get into a better diet when you get out of college. You’ll get away with eating garbage and not bloating like a sow until you get to be about 28-30…..then all hell breaks loose, this big belly shows up, and now it takes you longer to find your d**k than it does to actually piss (trust me, I work with about 7 guys that are going through this now).

There have been some good ideas on here, but one everyone has seemed to overlook is buy groceries on sale and freeze it or plan your meals accordingly. Chicken breast can be picked up at $1.99 a lb on sale around here and 5 lbs should get you 10 meals. Pork is also another meat that can be bought for a good price when on sale. Tuna or tilapia is cheap ways to get your fish. Sometimes you can buy hamburger in 5 lb tubes for 15-20% less than what they sell it for by the lb. There are a ton of websites that give you a weekly grocery list and meal plan which allows you to buy what you need for the week without throwing a bunch of stuff away after it spoils. Another thing I would suggest is to make big enough meals to be able to eat supper and use the left overs for the next day’s lunch. You can then look at it as your budget has to get you 7 meals. If you budget $70 you need to make a $10 or less meal….which for one guy, should be pretty easy.

look for specials and strike

walmart had frozen turkeys for 50 cents last week...full 20 lbs turkeys

Pasta is always easy and cheap and has many different variations. I ate lots in college.

I don't care much for pre canned sauce, but it's easy to make your own. Fry up some onions and garlic in oil (and whatever meat you have or don't have), add canned tomatoes, salt, pepper, spices (basil, oregano, parsley, whatevers you've got). Grab whatever veggies are on sale for additional nutritional value....celery, mushrooms, carrots, peppers, it all works. Salt the water and use LOTS of water to boil the pasta. It's an easy thing to make lots of and if you find the stuff on sale you can just buy lots.

If you are cooking-impaired, another easy one was to buy hamburger helper or something similar and add extra pasta and veggies so it goes further and isn't such a big salt bomb. Then you've got instructions to follow LOL

All that said....I would die on $50/week, I honestly don't think that's enough but food is a bit cheaper in the USA I suppose. Buy extra of whatever's on sale if you find a good price.

I think 70$ a week shouldn't be too hard given I can make it on 70$ a week eating expensive food on campus. The big thing is I don't spend money on what I drink so luckily water if free. Tuna is another food meat that is high in protein that I plan on eating quite a bit of. Between chicken breast and tuna hopefully I can get a mjaority of my protein from there(besides when I make chili and stew and such). I think within the next couple weeks I am going to try this to see how it goes. I'll let you all know how it goes and if I can make it on 70$ or not.

why don't you have us all donate our stool samples and the person with the one with the most nutrients you make arrangements to get them free and recycle...??
