Fogging

Evil, when you do this how long did you do it for? and what kinda fogging oil do you use? And where did you spray it from? Mine is very thick and doesnt spray a mist very good, and I have always been told to fog 1 min for each cyl. from a very good sled mechanic Ive know for years. I have long tubes on the end of my fogging can that you put right in the opening of the throttle bodies so it goes right in. If I just sprayed the stuff I have right in the box it would be a killer mess everywhere:face-icon-small-dis It would be in the box forever until I cleaned it out.

I use Stabil brand fogging oil. I spray it into the airbox, with the sled running, till it dies... or comes very close to dying. My Carbed 05 Doo 800 dies after about 8 seconds of spraying the fogging oil into the airbox.... My 2010 CFI 800 doesnt fully die, but comes close. I just kill it when it starts to get close, takes about 15 seconds. I too have a long tube on the end of the bottle to help get it closer to the throttle bodies. I've never had an issue with the airbox being coated still in the fall.

BTW... I hate fogging my sleds, not because it hard... just because it signifies the end of the season. :face-icon-small-sad

I must over do this thing every year, because if you guys do it for only 15 seconds? I am doing it for a good couple min's, just pushing the gas enough for it to stay running, and about dieing from all the smoke for 2 min's, I might have to rethink how I do this because the Pro isnt easy to do it to. I still have an idea on the cutting the airbox, but I havent had time to do it. I will figure out some way and let you guys know, when I get time.

Last year for my 2010 800 all I did was suck the gas out till I had about 1/4 tank. Added 3 ounces of oil and 3 ounces of seafoam to the tank.. Then about every two weeks I'd let it run for about as long as it took me to have a beer haha so about 5 minutes. Does this work Well enough or is fogging better? I also plan on putting a pa head and whatnot on over the summer... So what's me best option. Start every couple weeks or fogg and let it sit?
 
Seeing as how there is not actual air filter on the sleds, I'm leaning towards the fogging method, grease and wax the sled and cover it until fall. Keeps the gritty summer air out of the motor. There is a lot of farming around here so there always seems to be dust in the air.

I have always been a fan of fogging:face-icon-small-win It coats the motor very good and gets extra oil everywhere including the crank! My buddy who is a sled mechanic said thats the biggest reason cranks go bad:face-icon-small-sho I also asked about the start up method, ya he didnt like that either, but to each there own, he just said nothing helps your motor better than fogging period! Like I said before he said 1 min per cyl. also, just keep the motor running just fast enough not to kill for a good 2 min's to really coat everything good.:face-icon-small-hap
 
I have always emptied out the fuel and put half gallon of premium non ethanol fuel in then run it for a bit and then shut it down and put in shop,thats it.I have never had a problem in the last 10 years of riding doing this,but each to their own.
 
About how much do u pour in each cylinder? Just the same oil that I use in my sled? Polaris gold

That will protect the rings and cylinders from seizing, but really won't do anything for the bottom end. Getting the fogging oil into the intake will coat the bottom end and thus the main bearings. Very important.

For years I have put about 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil into the spark plug holes and then pulled the rope several time, and the oil does get into the crankcase. I have never had any problems with this process. I grew up on a farm and this process worked well on all types of engines. My dad just started up an old 50's Ford truck that has been setting out in the elements for over 20 years, after treating the engine as I have described. He replaced the battery, squirted some gas into the carb and it started right up. You can buy fogging oil and screw around with running it through the engine, but it’s not necessary in my opinion.

I did the run every month thing once, it blew up the first time out the next year.
I then did the stabil and fog which has worked fine except for one watercraft that I didn't fog. Yep, crank bearings went out on that first time out the next summer.
I don't know how some of you can fog without having a clear shot at the carb/throttle bodies. It make a heck of a mess as it all drains down to the bottom of the air box a out any drain holes.
 
I was holding the oil pump wide open for a min straight every time I started my wife's new 2012 600 until it was broken in. It billows out smoke like crazy and you know it's lubing the bearings. I wonder if you held it open for a few minutes at the end of the season with a half gallon of non-ethanol, 40:1 mix in the tank if it would be close to fogging it.
