Fixing XBOX 360. Anyone done it?

Got the red ring of death on my 360 last night. Checked the error code and am pretty sure it's the well documented heatsink/x-clamp issue. Warranty is long gone, so I'm going to give fixing it myself a try. Have done all my online research, and think I have a pretty good handle on the repair process, but I thought I'd check and see if anyone here has done it and has any tips or suggestions.
Hoping to start tomorrow, will post results if anyone is interested.

I have 2 dead ones.. Let me know how easy or hard it was to fix if you were able to get it done.

My brother got the red ring of death a while ago. I thought it was out of warranty but he still sent it to microsoft (or who ever fixes them) and they fixed it for free still. they were even able to keep all of his saved stuff on there. So it might be worth calling someone about...

that happened to mine a while ago and i forgot where i read this but I wrapped mine up in some blankets and then turned it on and let it ran for like 35 minutes or so i think, I cant remeber how long. But being wrapped up in the towls it like heated up and fixxed itself. try it out.

My bro just fixed one that he got for free. Now he's giving it to me as a late Christmas present. Should be here by the weekend. Now I just gotta save my pennies to get Forza Motorsport. lol

The dismantling process went fairly smoothly. Hoping to begin the reassembly tonight. Will post results and more details later.

You might still be under warranty. They had extended it to 3 years for the RROD (red ring of death). Mine did it a while back and they fixed it for nothing. Probably too late now that you have it disassembled, but thought I'd chime in anyway for anybody else facing it.

No problem, just make sure you have the right tools.

4 Lb hammer or 12 Gauge work really well.
Clears the problem up in a hurry

Update: Fired it up last night and it seemed to be working. Next step will be to leave it on for a few hours and make sure that all goes according to plan.
Assuming that it works, I will post my experience and the steps I followed in the days to come.
BC-XP, believe me, I contemplated the 12 gauge, but ultimately decided against it. While it would have been far more satisfying, the neighbors have some sort of unreasonable prejudice against discharging my firearms in the neighborhood.
