First ride questions

Took the new (to me) 08 D7 out yesterday for the first time. Sled ran perfect - and snow was awesome (27" fresh pow!). Have 1 problem and a couple of questions for the experts.

First, the problem. The sled idles fine at home (about 1500 rpm), but up in the mountains it would not hold idle. Wasn't a big deal except for trying to put it in reverse it would constantly stall unless I held the throttle at about 1000 rpm. Any sugestions?

Questions - Seems like it's pumping too much oil. I used about 2/3 of a tank of oil and a half a tank of gas. I haven't looked at where the pump is set yet, how should it be set? Also, any advice on how to keep the stupid heat shield on the pipe from rattling like crazy? It was driving me nuts.

I'm far from an expert, but usually not holding idle is a throttle position sensor issue. Do you have extra slack in the your throttle cable? Sometimes it just takes a little tightening.

My 700 uses about a quart per tank of gas. You sound a little rich on oil, how do your plugs look? There should be a thread in the "Increasing Your IQ" in the sticky section, if not a search should bring up a few threads on the subject.

Can't help you with the stock heat shield, I've had an SLP pipe and can on mine since after the first season 7 years ago. I know a few guys removed the shield and wrapped their pipe with heat tape to hold the heat in.
