First ride on the new toy

#3 is doing fine... it was a great day today, lower stuff is lacking a bit, but clearly been snowing consistently above 11k.

Biggest issue for me is that I HATE the 4's on the dirt... like with a passion. I live where I ride single from my house, and it's rock, all rock technicalish terrain that the 300 excels in, the 450 would just sit all summer.

A 501 I could have street legal & use for a scooter/ toy bike, but then I'd be racking up miles & worrying about how far I am from the first major issue...

I just don't want to deal with valve BS, and all the other crap EVERY friend of mine with a 4 has dealt with. I haven't ridden with a single 4 stroke that I even want to be on the trail with, from brand new WR's & YZF's, to CRF's & ktm SX's... none of them seem to be reliable for whatever reason & they all overheat like puking pigs on our trails. Every 4 guy I've ridden with has converted to a yz250 or a 300.

I really WANTED to want a 4 for snow, because obviously they do better, I just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger after despising the new 15 on the trail. We had a new 125 along as well, and I made my buddy from the dealer ride the 4 & I had a blast on the 125!!

I've got another 300 sitting here that I'll use as my shoulder season bike when the husqy is tracked but we are going to Moab or whatever, but it makes more sense for me, to have a spare 300 that I like, than have a newer 4 that I hate sitting all summer.

Obviously if I lived somewhere different this would be a totally different story.

Summitseeker, got a pic of the engine enclosure? Curious how that will work on a 2. Are any of you guys wrapping the pipe? Seems like that would be key as well. I've got a buddy giving me a PC pipe that I need to weld a minor crack on, should be ideal for winter I think, already got a new Gnarly sitting here for summer.

Good to see the 2 stroke is working on the snow. I have 300 2 stroke and a 450. Bought the 450 for snow biking mainly.

I feel the same way about the 4 stroke on the dirt. Not a day on the dirt goes by when riding the 450 that I don't say "F*cking 4 stroke". If it's not stalling it's finicky to start.

You couldn't pry the 300 2 stroke out of my cold dead fingers for technical mountain single track!

There is a lot of of info on the "ultimate 300 build" post. Basically if you want a 300 that runs with or outrun 450s on snow you need to change the port timing, add more compression, put on a pro circuit or Scalavini pipe and silencer, sx ignition, Boyseen rad valve, 38mm smart carb or Lectron for altitude and temp compensation and more top end, and a carb heater is essential. They run awesome on snow and for dirt I just swapped back to a xc ignition, mild power valve spring and took a little fuel off the bottom to run more crisp at low throttle, works great on trails at low throttle and if you twist it there is more power on tap that you will ever need on dirt, but it is handy for really steep long climbs or sand dunes.

Not too worried about beating anyone, my days of thinking my machine is the main factor in my riding are long gone.
I just want it to work consistently. As long as you have consistency and trust, you learn the machine and dial yourself to match it.

I'm a little confused by this TE though, the HP claims for it are what they claim for the XC with the sx cdi and head... makes me wonder if I'm off on it still needing the SX cdi.

Looking to run an RKT head (50% av at 10k, most days we unload at 10,800) and basically reliability mods from there (warmer, shroud, pod intake, remove airbox so I can install TSS) not a big fan of the porting oddly enough, maybe need to ride a few more ported. If anything I'd likely send it to RKT, he knows what I want for snow.

I hear ya, its not about beating anyone, its more about being able to ride the lines you want... A stock 300 isnt going to pull some of the lines your buddies on big 4 strokes will, some lines are essential some are not, most times you can switch back your way up but there are times pulling a steep line is your only route. Stock 300s are pretty tame. I agree with not liking to port engines, but your taking a dirt bike and throwing it into a situation its not built for so some things need to be changed to work right, the 300 is a low/mid motor... great for trail riding, not the best for a snow application. Porting isnt essential though, most od the bikes I built this year had stock porting with a high compression head, pipe, sx ignition and carb and they work fine, it just depends how you want it to work. Some guys have had good luck with stock carbs that ride at consistant elevation and temperature, I ride from 4,000 to 10,000ft and -10 to 40 degrees, makes it hard to jet properly. 36mm carbs give up a lot on top to the bigger carbs though.

had to loose boost so they didn't have an excuse anymore :D )

we need to get you out of those MTB helmets son; recent studies show damage from repeated head trauma is irreversible.....

just found out the other day that a KX fit kit will work on a KLX so that's good news. been eyeballing a couple of used kits. would like to take a spin on one of the himalayan kits from the great white north but not sure how that's going to happen any time soon. i'll keep you in the loop for sure. prolly going to hit taco tuesday at "death on a stick" aka JP. snow should be legit if all the outlaw snowbikers haven't tracked it all up.

Ooh and I tried wrapping the pipe and shrouds as well... pipe just needs a carbon pipe guard to keep the direct snow contact off, I didnt notice any difference in pipe wrap, I think its colder if anything. As far as shrouds I built mine with 1/8" stock car plastic, the one on the back of the motor is necessary to keep the track from kicking snow on the motor, the small one helped keep snow and cold air off the cylinder, the side shrouds made it run too hot in anything over 20 degrees, I run them on cold days. Another thing is to throw on a skid plate and put closed cell foam between the skid plate and motor and you will have to wrap your carb, even with a heater.

But next two weekends I'm in UT, so it was time for tires!

Got all summer to get this thing ready for next year... thinking sbout just doing a 380 on my other 3... we'll see how the summer treats me!

Looking good Kaleb! I'm still planning a bike for next year. How important do you think the majic button is? Thinking a cr500 with decomp will be easy enough to start but hard saying... Really trying to avoid a 4 and dirts not really important to me yet at least.

IMO the button is huge on snow... and having kick to back it up is also a big one to me. I HATE kicking bikes that don't want to start.

Got it on dirt at lunch today... man, hard to imagine the bike needing "more" power. This puts my other 300 to shame, and it's stock!

(my place is right behind that tree & down the hill 100 yards)

You may not care about dirt yet.... but you will :D

You should take a weekend once it's thawed around here & come ride, you can run a few 300's (got both of mine, and there are two more just on the hillside that we ride with) a cr450, a few YZ250's and a few others... see what you think of them for summer, and help decide how important the dirt side of things is for your choice. I'm keeping my other 300 as a spare just for this kinda thing, nice to have something other guys can come play on.

I'll probably have to take you up on that at some point. My issue is summer is usually busy so time is harder to come by. Also, it's my time to save for my fall and winter addictions, err hobbies...

For those with the TE300's / XC-W 300's, how are the wide-ratio tranny's working on the snow?

If you had the choice, would you prefer the close ratio tranny of the XC?

I've never ridden a 300 with an SX trans on snow so hard to say for me (I'll have 2 XC 300's here next winter), but even in the deep I'm not unhappy with where my shifting is. Right now 1st is way low, I can take off & spin feeling like I've got good power, but winds out too fast, 2nd is low enough that I can take off in it and boondock from full stop to climbs, and 3rd I'm using for light climbs or medium climbs if I've got a track to poachand most jumping, or flats. Planning to gear up one tooth up front and see what that does.

I've got an RKT 15:1 head on the way as of today

(Might go higher in winter, we'll see), and a PC pipe for winter.
