First Ride On New Toms Snowmobile Skid

Well, I know I'm biased because I've ridden the product but I am surprised after talking with Tom that nobody has jumped on the deal he is offering. Looks like it's pretty much a grand cheaper then the other popular skids and backed by a guy that will make it right for you.
Why do you think people are not getting on this?

I use a one off skid made by Tom for my Doo. Similar to a QA skid for the Doo. His service is absolutely fantastic. It's very nice to talk to someone who is vested in what he does and can talk on a technical level. Will be a repeat customer when I need more work in the future.

For me it goes back to the money and what I'm getting. I'm sure the product is good but the stock skid is great. The best I've ever had out of the box. I added Exit shocks and I think it works great so I have no reason to buy that or other suspension.

Because of brand familiarity. His skids are well known and respected by the Cat and, especially, the Doo crowd but this is his first foray into Poo territory. I would jump on it if I didn't already have one from Chris Burandt. He told me he wasn't going to diversify that much when the Pro first came out but I warned him the Pro would become a lot more popular than the other brands and we all know how that turned out. Glad to see he changed his mind!

Have FUN!

Tony,

Any new updates?

Not much from me since I haven't ridden yet. I know he installed a few more skids on a Pro, a Dragon and for some reason a 06 900 last week. I'm pretty sure some other members on here bought his skid, maybe they will chime in.

I tried to get buy the one of those skids from Tom. The whole thing has pretty much fallen through as of now. Not sure what is up as it has been really hard to get Tom on the phone or respond to PMs. The one time I did get to talk to him he said he had some kind of parts availability problem. With the shaft and belt issues Im going to either sell the Pro before I ride it or just ride it stock for a while and see how things sort out. I don't want to give Polaris any reason to deny a warranty claim.

Got around to weighing both skids. My stock Assault skid came in at 51 lbs. That's with front and back boogies. Toms skid is 37 lbs without boogies. I weighed 2 sets of boogies that I had in bag still from my new sled and they where 3.5 lbs. So real world difference of 10 lbs of unsprung weight. Depending on who you listen to, this can equal anwhere from 1.5 to 2.3 X's the weight savings of sprung weight.

Tom is also looking at stock rail compatability. Looks like it will move the rails back 1" and he is going to verify the scissor alignment this week. Using your existing rails would save you about $350-$400.

Tom also mentioned that he has enough parts right now to build 3 skids and he will sell them cheap this month if anyone is interested. I think he said $1600 but check with him in case I'm wrong.
Not bashing in any way, and i may have missed something along the lines, but a 2013 Assault skid 153 came in at 46.58lbs. Thanks!
Dan

Not following you. Are you saying that a Tom's 153 skid for a 13 Assault is 46lbs or a stock (155) 13 Assault skid is 46lbs? Thanks

Just re-weighed my almost stock(has Ice Age non bomber Assault replacement 155 rails) 2012 Assault skid with one set of boogies up front. Came in at 46.7 on my home scale. I little closer to what you had Dan. I'm guessing the difference between my two numbers are different scales and one less set of wheels and one less cross shaft on it now.

Yea, 5 lbs can make or break a sale. I like to be fair, and honest. It gives Everybody an even shake. The Assault i worked with had one set of boggies, and two spreader shafts, including the normal axles for everything. I will be completely shocked if an aftermarket rear skid in Moly saves anything, but it may be possible. I think now, if you cant save the guys weight, its going to come down to improving the ALL around. Thanks for reposting!
