I weight 230 and was riding about a foot of powder at 8000 ft this past week and my 2016 yz450FX with 2016 TS ST would scream in second gear but usually had trouble pulling third and would never finish revving out in any sort of a climb. the cold air intake was clean at all times, Is this about normal, i was expecting it to pull third easy in all situations, i am running stock exhaust with stock programming, is this all i got or is something not right. does a programmer make a big difference

give it +3 on timing across the board, this helps alot. third is hard to pull under a big load but second usually gets the job done just have to go a little slower (so u arent just spinning). The wide ratio is just tad bit of a big jump when climbing. Its a great bike but a straight 450f is a little better. The e start and higher trail speeds in 5th are worth it to me.

I have a fx and camso and weigh all of 265. Plus with gear. I can pull most everything in third. Usually hit it in fourth and down shift to third. I went to a 14 in the front to get trail speed faster. Barely noticed the dif on the hill. I do have to shift more though. I gutted the air box, used a uni filter with a pre filter and put a map in. I leaned it out a bit and added some timing. Was getting fuel in the oil. Seems to work good. I'm no where neer the fastest but I can hang with my skinny buddys.

You are at 8000'. Down on power about 25%. Will take some tweaking to get max performance at altitude.

Oxygen in the air is good

At my elevation (8-10), stock gearing, 185lbs w/avy pack and gear i can't pull third on a lot of hills. Have to shift down to second and then i just lose all momentum. Timing pretty aggresive but i could probably go more. I'm probably gonna gear down slightly so i can hold third more often.

You should get the new PR2 ecu and let us know what kind of difference it makes?

I haven't looked into it yet, but will it work on a FX? Seems like none of the stuff I want will work on the FX. IceAge nitrous is a no go and none of the Raze stuff will work either.
Yes they have it

Thanks guys, I was planning on getting a controller anyway and get what i can get out of this motor the way it is, but its good to know im not too far off to begin with, second gear gets her done in the trees but it just seems like you need to be in third to climb out of the bowl to get to the next one, Any one else experiment with lower gear ratios.

I'm thinking about buying the $80 ts 16 tooth and changing my top 17 tooth. I wish there was a cheaper option. The countershaft sprocket is not an option for me on my YZ.

I weigh 235 raw. My cr 500 pulls 4th gear no
problem 3rd at worst in 20" of pow ....but it
burns the fuel.....

Don't climb straight up. Zig zag.

How do you guys determine how much timing advance you can run? My map has a little extra in the upper end but nothing through the mid ranges.

That's a great question, one I've been thinking about also. I'm mostly +1's and +2's on the timing with zeros on the fuel. It looks like a lot of people are going +3 and +4 all the way across the board as well as reducing fuel. I have about 30 hours on my bike and want to go get the valve clearance checked. If all is good I think I will get more aggressive with my mapping.
Anyone with a lot of hours on aggressive mapping chime in?

dyno tuner. bike wheel on rear. need to have the readouts for afr, and power/torque. without it, you are guessing, and using your butt as a dyno. Ski

more timing, less fuel

At 8,000+ ft you could run the timing at +7 across the board and not have any issues with detonation. We run our YZ450F's at +4 timing and -5 fuel and ride at 8000-10,000ft. We also run a more open exhaust. One bike has FMF with the quiet insert and the other and FMF with no insert at all. Both bikes run better, but the bike with the more open exhaust runs a lot stronger.
