Firearm purchase question

I am wanting to get a hunting rifle and a handgun. Problem is I f*cked up when I was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay young. 19 to tell the truth.

Does anyone know how far back a typical background check will be? FYI, what I did was non-violent, non-threatening. Just took some beer from a locked walk-in cooler. Theft and an MIP. Not proud of it but hey, I was 19. Being 38 now, I think that close to 20 years with the only laws I break are speeding, pretty damn good and lesson was learned. So just wondering.

contact the local branch of the fbi..most likely you will need a lawyer and petition the state the offence occured in and file a motion in court to get back your firearm privledges..but contact fbi first and see what they say...

i might be wrong on this but i believe in the state of washington as long as it wasnt a felony your good, i cant emagine that a MIP would affect you buying a gun but also ask the local gun shop they should know.

It has been awhile since I have worked in firearms sales but back then it was only felony offenses that stopped you from purchasing firearms. So going off of that, it all depends on how your indiscretions were charged. Misdemeanor should be ok going off my previous knowledge (which is outdated). I'll call a buddy that is a licensed dealer here in Wyoming. See what he has to say.

..Pretty sure that if it wasn't a felony, yer OK. But I'm no lawyer either.
Just stroll on down to the gun store & inquire...Bet they'd know without much of a hassle.

I have had my CCP for quite a few years, but if Im not mistaken the only thing that would cause you a problem would be a felony conviction, or a domestic violance conviction.

Nothing to worry about, you are not a convicted felon.ATF form 4473 is all you will need to fill out for the long gun purchase, you will get aproved, delayed(max time is 72 hours) or denied(then you will meet some people with no sense of humour). I don't know CO laws on handgun permits.

your cool. I got an MIP when i was 17 and bought a few guns since then in MT. as long as your not a felon your good to go as far as i was aware.

Yup, MIP is not going to stop you from buying a gun, trust me I had a few when I was younger. Just be honest on any form you have to fill out. I am in the process of filling out a ccp and it asked about any convicted crimes or tickets. I called the local police dept. and asked if that meant MIP, careless driving, speed exhibition, and numerous other stupid offenses and they said yes. They are mostly looking for how honest you are in filling these forms out. Unless you beat little kids for a hobby then you might be out of luck. Might have to drive to Browning and buy your pistola then...

I was told that here in N.D. it won't matter on purchasing any firearm, but any alcohol offence can stop you from getting a concealed weapons permit.

If it wasn't a felony there is no issue. If you broke into the building then it is burglary which is probably a felony.

Look into having the offense expunged from your record. If you have stayed crime free since then and it was not violent it shouldn't be hard.
