When you are looking at a couple hundred acres on fire a mile away defensible space is relative. We have done allot to create defensible space at Crooked Creek Ranch, and if the fire would have moved due West it still would have been sketchy. We have probably logged close to 200 acres and there is still plenty more to do. Even with 200-400 yards of defensible space the fires throw embers as they get rolling and buildings will still need to be protected in some way to survive a raging wildfire. Do what you can.....
 
Yea, I heard some pretty crazy stories from a few local VFD guys in my area. They would get a fire line set and think they had it, then a raging fire would start 200 yards behind them in the next row of trees and it was a mad dash to get out before they were stuck. Sounded like a complete ****-show for the first day. It probably didn't help that the wind was blowing at about 50 mph down fourmile canyon...
