My son decided to give our 08 700 complimentary scuba diving lessong in a lake last July on our last ride of the year. It went down in about 12' of water, we had to leave it overnight to get the gear to rescue it including float tubes, building a homemade grapple hook ...
It was in the water about 14 hours, when we got it home we drained the gas, sucked all the oil and remaining gas out replaced it with new gas (mixed to give more oil to the motor), then started it up - it ran but would not idle, we had to hold the throttle open to keep it running and we ran it for about 20 minutes that way to make sure we had motor dried out.
A few days later i went out to start it and it would not start again, i tried different things, starting fluid, checked the plugs, ... it would pop and sputter, especially the first time you pulled it after it sat for a while, but would not run. It has great spark, the fuel pressure comes up (you can let the pressure off through the pressure check valve. I thought maybe some of the components had water in them and needed to dry out, so we kept trying it from time to time over the summer to no avail, it would pop and sputter on the first pull then sound like it fires a little on subsequent pulls, but not enought to get your hopes up.
I just tested and calibrated the TPS tonight, it had no effect, it was a little off, but not way out.
I am looking for suggestions on what i can check next - any and all ideas are welcome.
A few ideas i have:
- could the coils have water in them and cause it to fire good at first and then go weak?
- the motor was running as it went down, what way can i check for engine damage - do cranks twist when you ingest water? Could the motor be out of time?
- Could it be the ECU and have issues with the the water?
- What other things could cause this?
- Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your help!!!!
