FACTORY RACE SLED

Tough crowd in here! LOL

Sled looks great cable, definately good to see Yami getting back in the game. You never know what theyll come up with if they continue to branch out..

Good luck to you this season!

It will be interesting to see If Yamaha will use this opportunity for some good R&D for their production mountain sleds. One could hope right?

Here are the internal pics as promised.

I will do a RMSHA race thread with action pics/vid and official race results when available. This thread seems to be a little long winded and sidetracked, but here is some Bear Lake info since some of you are asking.

Thurs testing allowed us to dial in for elevation, and my mod sled was BAD FAST! I was all smiles going into Fri qualifying knowing the weapon I was about to unleash. The rider ahead of me in 600 mod took out a gate 1/2 way up the hill and I was held on the starting line for 10 mins waiting for the gate to be replaced. In that 10 min timeframe of off and on idling, an electrical problem developed which stopped fueling the #3 injector. This gremlin wasn't fully realized until I had already taken the green light and had started up the hill. Full throttle produced about 40% power at 4lbs of boost on 2 cyl, and the sled was seriously wounded. The lack of power cost me 5-7 secs on my ET, but superior chassi speed and the outstanding susp performance still allowed me to click off a 55 sec run. This was good enough for a 12th place effort on a broken sled in a class that was won with a 47 sec ET.

We tore the sled apart and replaced plugs/coils/injectors before realizing it needed a new wiring harness that we did not have available. This downtime cost me a DNF in 700 mod, and I had to ride my teammate Kody Malmborg's sled in 8 and open mod. Kody and I have completely diff setups and I struggled to find the speed with his sled that I have with mine. I finished 18th and Kody placed 19th in 800 mod which had 22 riders. As the last rider up in open mod, I unleashed a banzai run in a futile attempt to make something happen. My cash or crash effort led to catastrophic failure of the rear skid as I jumped the catwalk under full boost. The broken and crippled skid caused the track to lose all tension, everytime I nailed the gas, the screws would auger into the front cooler, and I was forced to end the run before tripping the timing lights.

Not a good weekend to say the least, but I wouldn't qualify it as embarassing. We left alot on the table At Bear Lake. Equipment failures and missed opportunities bit us hard, but we will learn from our mistakes.:crutch:

You should try an Expert-X. They are heavy, but bulletproof and soak up hits like nothing else. They'll rip apart the tunnel before you bend a skid part. Ti springs would get one to low 50's for weight but at least it would allow you to race.

Good Luck on your next races. Are you keeping the Timbersled?

The skid I junked was an experimental MPI/Simmons unit(wasatch) that was in my teammates sled. The Timbersled skid worked great and suffered no damage,...in fact, we pulled it out of my dead sled and stuck it into Kody's for his new member classes on Sat,... he finished 2nd with it. Now corporate is trying to get 2 more Timbersled skids for our team to use the rest of the year.

I like the MPI/Simmons(wasatch) skid for playing in the powder in a mtn sled setup, and it has a lot of cool features, but it's raceability needs work. The Timbersled skid has shown the ability to compete head to head with the EZ ryde on the race circuit in terms of performance, and I think it will be more durable as well.

Sorry to hear you guys had such a rough go at it. When it rains it pours. Learn from it and move forward. good luck on the next outing.

thats some bad luck the yamaha camp had this weekend the chassis looks stock from the pics. that is a small turbo like a 2554 i bet and ulmers header unless yamaha is making there own cast header. Maybe u should try a kmod suspension? way higher durability from what i've seen. whats with all the chaincase problems in earlier races are they that much of weak point. can you say anything else about the motor or fuel system? is see altered cooling lines and a faucet return oil pump which is mid-mount turbo thing no something u see on a front mount but be careful cause that little bugger could fail and send some brass pieces into that secret motor

I have owned Yamaha since 2002. Mountain max, Viper and I now own an Apex. They are great reliable sleds but the fact remains that they are heavy in stock form. When you have to dump that kind of effort into a sled just to compete with Polaris, Arctic Cat and Skidoo that says a lot. In the real world Yamaha needs to sell sleds. 165 horsepower stock and 500 pounds with 4 stroke reliability and I'm happy. Everyone else can do it without the turbo.
Its that simple. I hope your race efforts bring that kind of success back to Yamaha.
