F-Bomb Track trim review

Trimed my track on my new 2012 163 pro and headed to Revy this weekend... First day of riding the snow was dry and fluffy and i was riding with two other pro without there tracks trimed..Cant say i really noticed any difference between stock and trimed. The track speeds were the same on all the pros. Then later that day and the next the snow firmed up and the track really hooked up and pulled hard, felt alot less slip from the track.... Conclusion I think it is going to be a great mod for washington snow... Thanks Rob for the tip and Great working Better Boards

I only trimmed mine at first, on my old dragon, then later on added screws. Very glad I did for one main reason. Late season riding. We were trying to get into beaver creek in Chetwynd bc for a late season ride. The trail going up was glare ice. One guy barely made it up in front of me, I was next, and drove up without much of an issue at all. And then there were 30 guys down below who couldn't made it no matter how hard or how many times they tried. I credit the screws in my track for getting me up there. I didnt really think twice about the ice, I just went. The guys with stock 5.1's, CE's, powder claws, all had zero hook up on that ice. There was only the one narrow trail to go up on, no way to just break new trail. Ended up spending a few hours shoveling out a new ledge for the rest of them to come up on. If your trails going up ever get icy, screw that track! Makes all the difference. And I can't say I noticed any downside to it compared to how it was with just the trim job.

Were the screw heads exposed at all aiding in ice traction? Or, just the fact that the paddles didn't fold over like a dogs ear get you the hook up you needed?

My track is trimmed on my 11 Pro, and you can really feel it grab that harder snow. I smoked a 12 Assault with the 5.1, not trimmed In a race up a hard packed hill, but I'm 50 pounds lighter than the other guy, but I know that track had a lot to do with it.

MountainMilitia I'd bet you a pretty penny that in 9 out of 10 days irregardless of who you are and where you ride on an IQ or a PRO chassis even a trimmed CE will outperform that track in stock length. I did a 144 for a race sled and it was impressive! It's another notch better track for most western mtn free riding and just like with any track there is not enough space in the stock chassis of that platform to battle windage and performance robbing scraping and that alone makes it better. A couple guys have done them with the same results or improvements in track speed and freed up snort. If money was no object it's my number one track for any sled I own. Problem is there is not "ENOUGH" difference between the CE trimmed and a stocker free with the vehicle 5.1 in performance to warrant the cost and trouble. But if you have it already...get to work!

As far as screws go the CE is a stiffer throw so I'd trim first and add screws as or if needed. I have my doubts that you'll want them for added lug bite...if you ended up in a lot of icy racing situations hillclimbing then maybe...but for simple traditional snow bite and traction I'd say not initially.

They were not sticking out of the paddle, they were inset a little bit, but not completly buried in the paddle. You could see them all. The main reason they helped so much was the screw heads were pretty much as wide as the paddle top. So the edge of the screw head helped grab. The attaking edge of the screws were starting to wear some, so I know they were grabbing. I had a bunch of nice pics on my phone, but I just sold the track and deleted the pics. I might have some on the computer. I can check when I get home on Monday if you like.

I'm going to disagree with you Rob. I had the CE on the D8 and it is a great track. The reason I disagree is that it hooked up in most conditions really well (steller for drag racing). It was a little stiff in the really fluffy stuff and that's why I say leaving the CE untrimmed would be better. You already have to make some limiter strap adjustments to avoid trenching with that track. Trimming it would really make it a hard track. Just my $.02

x2 maybe its the different snow conditions in different areas but first mod i will do to any polaris is switch the stock track for a camo everybody i talked into switching they completely agree and they were hesitant to switch to a camo. I was mark for mark with a stock 153 m8 i had a 163 stwitched tracks and its not even a comparison now.

hahaha

are you saying Chris is fat?

not to burst your bubble but you beat me a lot harder when i was on your pro and you were on my assault ;) Which it probably has to do with the mapping. I gotta keep laying off the burgers. Course I don' tthink i could ever get to be 80lbs like you tanner! haha

I ended up with a CE due to a unpredicted mishap with the stock 5.1 on my 163 Pro. I only got one late ride in after the swap and haven't gotten out this year yet. It sounds like a few people don't think trimming it would be a benefit, if I did trim it would it be at the base of the finger like on the 5.1?

Thanks
MM
