F-150 ecoboost

My 06 GM 5.3 gets 11mpg with that weight at 8K ft now :face-icon-small-win.

My 05 GM 5.3 only got 6.5-7 pulling 6000lbs. I got around 13-14 empty in the city.

If the Ecoboost gets 10-12mpg real world #'s pulling 10,000lbs, then there gonna sell a bunch of them. My Duramax barely gets that. How does it stop, or handle the swaying when the wind blows pulling that much weight?
 
Here are some figures that have me wondering how well the eco really works...

Ford Eco-boost

365hp at 5000rpm

420 torque at 2500rpm

11,300 towing with 3.73 gears, 145” wb, 4x4





GMC 2002 2500 HD Crew 6.0L, 4.10 gears, 265 tires.

300hp at 5200rpm

360 torque at 4000rpm

I've seen the 4000 a few times on my GMC and it doesn't sound pretty. Maybe it was 4500, I don't know, towing a camper in the mtns. Now if that Eco gets that much torque at 2500rpm, hmmmmmm........

Bad comparison. A great new engine from Ford vs. a motor that I never felt was very good. It had low HP and terrible MPG. Compare it to the new 6.2. 403 HP and 417 torque. I'm not even saying that this motor is better than the EcoBoost, just that things have changed a lot since 2002. Maybe that is just a comparison for you.
 
Ford is working on a 5.0 v-8 eco for the super duty's and mustang SVT project. If it comes a reality we may see the first 20mpg 500plus tq gas engine in a production vehicle, that would be cool and would be sub 2500 rpm for peak tq. The lil 3.6 is an over achiever to say the least.

Any idea what model year Super Duty we may see this in? 2012?

Not the first to get 20+ MPG

The current Corvette ZR1 gets 21 MPG on the highway and produces 604 ft-lbs . :face-icon-small-win

Z06 gets 24 MPG but only has 470 ft-lbs

Regular base Corvette gets 28 MPG 424 ft-lbs

This would be the ultimate!!!! I would even take the current eco in a super duty over the 6.2.
 
Without a trailer, I've been chained up and headlight deep pushing snow in mine. I had a lot of confidence in what it would do.

Headlight deep??? That is nearly 4 ft deep snow...right? Hummm...I would have to see that to believe it :)

Trailer Sway Control Standard

The 2011-2012 F150's including the Superduty has Trailer Sway Control. They work very well too.:face-icon-small-ton
 
Any other owners or people with first hand experience out there?

I think I'll run down to the dealer and look at one.

Based on what I've read it sounds like 10mpg pulling a 2 or 4 place open trailer 2000-4000lb is possible. If it gets 8.5mpg pulling a 9,000 lb enclosed, 10 sounds reasonable and the torque curve hits at real low rpm.
 
I don't feel so bad, I thought my mileage sucked and it's not far off the Eco boost in my 100,000 mile 2007 Tundra. I drive pretty hard all the time and my city mileage is 14-15 and pulling a 4 place Mirage steel(almost 6000lbs) up and down the mountains is 7-8 and average towing the flats and mountains combined is 9-10. I just had a Transferflow 46 gallon gas tank and airbags installed. Range is now over 600 miles un-loaded. Best part is I can nearly always put non-ethanol gas in it now with the increased range. I really felt nervous with only 200-250 mile range heading into the mountains. I've done the cold hard math on fuel savings and even with $4 gas/diesel I can't justify a new truck or a diesel just based on fuel economy. The ONLY negative to my Tundra has been the mileage but a 400HP 4x4 running 35" tires is never gonna be economical. That said I would prolly buy a new Tundra if it had a DI gas or high HP diesel engine option.

Let me rephrase that. My bow wave was that deep. I occasionally had to stop and back up and I was leaving the imprint of my headlights and the blue oval in the burm I was pushing up.
 
Drove it

I drove the Eco boost F150 yesterday and got 21.8 to 22.5 MPG on the 40 mile round trip I drove. I realize this is not Towing anything but that is Impressive and its not a Frame Breaking Toyota, Not for me. Only AMERICAN Trucks in Montana.

I'm not sure what rear end ratio you have but mine is 3.73. I've only seen under ten mpg if I drive with my toe nails in the fan blades.

Ford hit one out of the park with the Ecoboost.

You have to believe the others have similar powerplants in various stages of R&D
If so, the future looks great for us half ton owners!

Maybe the Govt. needs to throw a bunch of cash at GM & Chrysler to help get them in the game.
 
MT Tundras are built in TEXAS! One of the reasons I bought it.

Oh that means all the money to buy it stays there too..... Nice reason. Boost Japans economy. Good reason. I know I know some of Ford, Chevy and Dodges parts are made in Mexico and Canada. In the end the money comes back here. I much rather pay to employ some of our northern border friends than fuel the Japanese government that would turn on the U.S.A. in a second.

I do not deny the Japanese have quailty vehicles. They do. But now more than ever we as Americans must rebuild our economy. Not someone elses. Be American! Buy American!

I do not want this thread to turn into a pissing match over being American. It just gets under my skin when people think they are buying American products and supporting America by buying something owned by a foriegn country. I am guilty of doing it too. It is hard not too, but you will never see a foriegn vehicle in my drive way. That is one thing I have control over choosing where it is from.

BTW Toyotas are not build in the U.S.A.. They are assembeled here with parts built in Japan.
 
I agree with your rationale.

However, after the bailouts, I would likely buy Toyoga or Nassin before GM or Chrysler
