Evolution Air Rear Suspension install

Don't you just get two rear shocks and a suspension arm?

According to the article in snowest alot of time was spent getting everything redesigned as far as valving on the rear shocks and the rear arm.
Sounds pretty over priced to me compared to say a timbersled rear end that drops alot more weight.

I was going back and forth over Toms and Timbersled. First off Toms is about $600 cheaper. Timbersleds is 6 lbs. lighter, but I noticed a few guys talking about bent arms on their Timbersled Mtn tamers. That scared me:D I like Toms because of the use of "mostly" stock doo parts. I will say this though; that's the biggest box, full of the least amount of stuff I've ever seen for $1400:eek: I kept digging through the packing material to make sure I wasn't missing something:confused: Did you guys, that recieved your kit already, get a Float 2 for the front? Mine doesn't say it's the 2. I hope the "inerds" are Float 2.

So, is that different from the Float 2 and the Original Float? Toms ad talks about upgrading you old Floats to the new 2. Are we getting the old stuff:confused:

The front shock in the kit is a high flow fox float, not a float2, and not an original float. It is specifically designed for the front of the skid. It is basically a fox float2 but with higher flowing guts inside. A standard float2 wouldnt work as well for the front of the skid as the high flow version. This is the information that Casey at tomssnowmobile gave me when I asked your same questions. Hope it eases you a little.

You da man Skank! Thanks for the info. I feel better now knowing my $1400 bought me a "new/old/better float! Can't wait to pull the rope!!!

'09 XP 154x with Tom's Evolution rear and Float R Evolv front:

First weekend out I destroyed the modified rear arm shock mount bracket.
There was a question as to the integrity of the much thinner than stock mount a month or two ago in Dootalk - Tom assured us that it was not an issue - then volunteered to modify the bracket if we sent the item back (??). I rec'd mine about a week after that statement and did not receive the updated item :-(.
The new top shock mount tab bent to the point that the top of the shock bottomed out against the arm. Both ends of my Fox shock are scarred up due to grinding against other suspension parts when the geometry changed (ie it did not clear the other parts anymore).
I called Tom and he sent me the updated piece. I have not installed / rode with it yet. I hope my shock still is functional (appears to be - but battle scarred). Tom noted that I was the only failure they had heard of.
I am about 165 lbs. I never jumped, but did ride whooped out trails. I was tuning it in when I noticed the failure. I will note that I never achieved more than about 75% of my top speed thru the whoops - I could have pushed it quite a bit harder, but obviously the suspension, in its initial form, could not take the load. I am quite dissapointed about this aspect of my experience thus far.

Prior to failure I will note that I did enjoy the suspension better than stock. It offers a generally smoother ride on the rear end. I did not make it to what I consider a "tuned for me" set of settings but I was zeroing in and it was getting better with every adjustment. There is some sag using the recommended settings (psi & clicker position) but sag is a requirement of any highly tuned suspension - I found it better than the stock sacked out torsion springs.
One of the main reasons I bought it was for the rough trail. I have a moto background and like to ride the rough stuff fast. For the average guy I would say stock would do - you have to be really pushing it to really reap the rewards of a high end suspension - the average joe simply cannot ride that fast, and I would not recommend it to the average rider as a way to solve the issue of complaints that the trail is too rough.
As for deep snow and ability to perform better than stock I have no real comments yet as I did not get enough seat or tuning time to try it out or compare it to a similar stock units.
I run w/o a sway bar in the front so I wanted the ability to up the preload slightly to compensate and the floats give me that ability. I am still tuning them in, and found the recommended settings (Tom's) a bit too high (air preload).
I fully expect to need 3-4 days of tinkering to get everything set up to run optimally. That is just the time it takes for something like that. Tom's settings are like ski-doo settings - good for the average person, but with a suspension like this one has to realize that tuning it to perfection takes time.
I will chime in again in a few weeks to update where I'm at with the replacement arm and deep snowmobility of the entire setup.

Well here's my imput. The shock mount on mine has been "stretching". I painted my parts red for a better look, and I have been watching paint fleck from the weld for the upper shock mount. I called Tom's 3 weeks ago and Casey ASSURED me that the mount would not fail and he offered to send me a new arm with some additional bracing. He said they would bill me for the new arm, and then credit my card once they recieve the old one. The ride is much better if you ride fast. I weigh 230lbs and love to FLY. Yesterday the Evol Air held up to a bunch of runs at a 50 mph step up and some 80' flat landings in fairly hard snow. After yesterdays beating, more paint came off of the weld. I'm getting the new arm tomorrow. It's too bad Tom didn't admit to his design flaw early on. They keep assuring everybody that the original is fine, yet they offer a reinforced part for free. Tom should have voluntarily "recalled" the arms and taken care of his customers right away. Casey said "they tested it to death. It held up to everything." They must have used a Chimpanzee as the test rider. As you can see from the pics, IT WILL FAIL sooner or later. I hope the 2.0 version is better.

If it were "stretching" would'nt the paint be coming off both sides of the tabs? I'am 225 and have beat the hell out of mine and no problems so far. keep us informed thanks

Maybe it isn't stretching!? All I know is the paint is coming off on the inside of the shock tower area. The weld is only on the ends and outside, so maybe is twisting and gonna end up looking like the other guys up there ^ Like I said, so far it's taking some good hits-but bigger ones are in store!!

My experience so far with this is system is great. I agree that it is a way better system than stock, and much improved from the zero pros. I also agree that it takes a lot of time tinkering around to get the correct settings for what you like, and for the conditions. When you guys are adjusting your settings (psi) are you letting all of the air out of the rear shox (the Evol chamber, and the Main chamber) then suspending the rear of the sled (so that the full track is off the ground) and then pumping the new desired air into the Evol chamber first then the main chamber? I was told by Tom and Gill (who is the actual designer of the Evol air suspension) that the internal valves in both the main and Evol chambers need to be reset from the bottom to actually achieve the full new pressure/settings. I am about 175 lbs with full ride gear and ride good mix of mountain, trail, and boon docking. I am lucky enough to live 1 hour away from Tom’s in Sierra City and seem to find myself at his place once a month asking questions and listening to the “inside track”. I have to admit you guys are scaring me with these pictures. I am going to go home and fully examine my rear arm shock mount. One thing I am struggling with is the rebound adjustments. How do you tell where you are currently at? Is there a top (end) on both the fast and the slow? There are no #’s or psi to read. Is it just a ride and modify as you go? Or do you count how many clicks/turns and go from there? Good luck gentlemen. :beer;

Oh ya one more thing be carefull about taking the idler wheels out. Make sure you are riding pure fluff all day, or run ice scratchers. I learned from experience.

I think the reason you guys have had problems with the rear arm is because you painted it polaris red!!!!!
