Engine reliability 2013 vs 2014 Any changes to improve

Are 2014's modified to be better than the past years. I'm thinking of 1, I like the ride for my back, but don't want past years problems. Is it a better ride down the trail and bumps? Drawbacks over Doo?

improvements in 14 engine remain to be proven, 13s seemed much better than average 11s & 12s....but still aren't up to reliability of the e-tec doo engine....poos are light for sure, but the 13 & 14 doos handle off trail very well also...ride down the trail goes to the doo, no question...and overall dependability certainly goes to the doo for the 13s & 14s....resale of the e-tec is better than the poo, which as you have noted, doesn't have the best reliability record...jmo, of course, but a pretty good one..:lips:

Doos engine is reliable, chassis not so much. If you fart next to it you will bend an s module. For me it's like this... 4 year warranty on the Doo and poo....blown engine in the Pro gets you a new one under warranty....bent s and e modules gets you nothing but 8 hours of labor and $600 in parts. I literally have a mountain of bent s and e modules from my XP and my race sleds. Never been on the cat, no one seems to have one together long enough for me to ride one.

...totally agree about the s-module being vulnerable, a true liability with the sled, especially in early/low-snow situations...the rest of the sled seems pretty dependable (13s &14s)...the op seems to put a bit of emphasis on ride, which the poo is the worst of the main 3 800s....both of the poos i had also had electrical problems, grip heaters, gages and voltage regulators, so poo didn't make any points with me there...as to the cats, the 14s seem to have the new sled problems of the 12s and 13s figured out...the engine is the best of the 800s, the ride is the best and overall sled seems to have the least problems of the main 3 800s....yes, i bought a 14 cat, still have my 13 doo, and sold both my poos because of overall lack of dependability....just my experience, but i gave all of them a chance to show their stuff...:typing:

250 miles so far on my '14 and it is WONDERFUL! no problems whatsoever. i turned up my oiler and thats it. i honestly think turning up the oiler will help these engines ALOT. i came of a '10 m8 and it was a rocketship compared to the pro. but the pro makes up for it by weight and getting on the snow with ease. and i dont know if it matters to you but i love the compact feeling of the bodywork and total package of the pro. the doo probably rides better cause its like 100 lbs heavier. comparing a Cadillac to a Corvette

I hate my Pro's engine vibration at idle and at 3,000 rpm it is god awful. Its a ^Y&*(*&^% shame that my wife's 16 year old sled's engine runs smoother and it will probably last 6-10 times more mileage before needing an overhaul.

If money were no option, I'd consider an Etec 800 in a Pro RMK....what a nice combo that'd be.

Engine reliability

you can fix these vibrating hunks and gain power, relialibity AND still be waaaaaay less money invested than an etec with a simple direct replacement piston from RK tec. it also helps to have a solid dealer that works with ya. just my .02

Engine changes... the 2013's have thicker cylinder skirts, improved in an area known for failure. The 2014's are rumoured to have a new piston part number.

I think you can make a Pro engine pretty reliable. I don't think it comes from the factory that way.

You can easily tailor the ride on the Pro. It does not ride as well as the Cat or Doo on premium shocks though. Poo's W/E shocks are fair at best.

For your back, and reliability, you go down and buy a Yamaha.

675 hard back country miles on my 14 pro 163...no problems so far. I'm really impressed with this sled if you love nothing but off trail boondocking steep and deep!!!. As for trail riding nothing is better then a proclimb m8 sno pro for handling the bumps....that suspension just works for for that! Just don't get a 12 proclimb, I had nothing but problems the newer ones seem better!

IMO, I love the Pro , had 2 an 11 and a 13, 3000 miles on 11 no issues, put in a mtntk piston kit sold the sled to a buddy and its still goin strong. Had SLP pipe and controller from the start, 13 put 980 miles bone stock with a 174 track, loved it. Sold it and trying a Prolite this year, haven't had a Cat since 09. Had a 04 Rev, 08 Doo and now have a 10 Doo both as wife's sled, try not to ride them much. The Doo is a great ride on the trail and the reason my wife likes it is the reason I don't. Its really stable and grounded, way more than the Pro or Cat. I like to ride a sled not sit on it and drive like a quad. Yep, Poo has had motor issues, but I think $5-600 ish every 1500 to 2000 miles helps, and this year I sno checked a Doo, $14400 plus gst, $15200 , holy $hit, a Pro was $13400 all in, you can afford a few changes, and I've never liked Doo clutching, guys say it's good but then you see the Pro with less hp right there. Lots of that extra hp is lost in transmission somewhere. Also the Doo steering and feel is IMO kinda goofy, big fat bottom where your feet go and chopped off little nose, and there's a reason they've narrowed the ski stance every year. Dependable, you bet, great motor, love the new style bag and gas can thingy, decent track, great mileage. The heated dash bag on Poo is awesome, warm and dry, the Doo one yech, wet, hard and cold. I never broke a drive belt or changed one, have only seen 2 broken, but I think it's a system that need improving, just a constant worry.
My vote Pro, just way more fun, it feels like its part of you when boon docking, the Doo I feel like I'm sitting ON it. One more point for Pro when trenches in, nothing crawls back on top like a Pro, just get off give it a bit of throttle and it's spooky how it'll climb back up, way better than Doo.
We haven't had many Cats in our group last couple years, but changing this year and I'm looking forward to riding my new one.
My buddy took my Doo sno check.
They've all got good and bad, kinda like women, pick your poison.

If you really like vertical steering, the doo is out. The poo gets on the snow best, trenches the least, easiest to hold on a hill, just inherent in the chassis design. Up front cost on the poo is lowest, long-term cost even, at best. Poo simply has the best OOTB clutching, no comparison. My 14 800 has run flawlessly, and has more snort than my 11 did, stock (11 now has a RKT drop in kit). If you ride deep and want bang for the buck, the poo can't be beat. It is a POS on the trail compared to the doo and cat. If you have the ching and time, they can all be rigged to outdo the others. Up to you and your skills.

FWIW i got my '14 pro for $10400 out the door. i did add 2 year extended warranty for $750. i kinda wish that i wouldnt have now, simply because im one that likes to modify, but it will be good in the long run, ill just put shocks on it.

I am not a mechanic, so I don't have the technical talk. just that the kit was on for 300 miles, I went riding, motor seized up, got it unsiezed, idled to the road, went down the road 800 yards, sled locked up, wife towed me out. took sled to dealer, dealer told me $4300 to fix. sold chasis, so as not to deal with sled anymore. second motor this year on that sled. lost top end first time last march.

kind of off topic Tim, but 300 miles and it went down. So the pistons failed with 300 miles on them or something else failed and how many miles did the failed part have on it?

12 Pro 800. Just rolled over 1400. Not a single issue what so ever.

Every MFR has a handful of lemons. Does that make the entire lot diseased, I don't think so.
