Engine Oil

I've used the search function and came up dry.
I've been reading about different kinds of engine oil (this started with my truck).

Has anyone tried shell Rotella 5w40 T6 in there snowmobile or ATV? I see it's JASO MA certified so it should be good for wet clutches (which may or may not apply with the starter clutch). I would think this should be a good year round oil for both quads and sleds.. Thoughts? It seems to work fine in my Diesel pick-up!

What other oils are you running (other then the obvious Yamalube and Amsoil)? I see lots using Mobil 1 5w30, is this the motorcycle version or the one for cars?

From what I've read JASO MA is a must for "wet clutches", what if an oil states it's non-friction modified, or non energy saving is that equavalent?

Thanks for your time!

Sean

I use motal 0-40 sled synthetic with good results. Lots of guys run the mobil 0-40 walmart oil which can be bought for under 10 a Liter

I used Castrol Syntec 0W30 for the last two years. I'll probably switch to Mobil 1 0W40 this year.

Thanks Guy's

Thanks for the responses guys!
In my reading on different forums it appears Yamalube in Canada comes from Imperial oil (Esso)? Interesting... Again this is just me reading other forums I have nothing confrimed.

True or Not true - Yamaha Belt driven atv's (Rhino's, Kodiaks, Grizzly's) inbehind the primary clutch have a centrifugal clutch just like big bears used to? If they do I'm going to assume the JASO MA spec still applies to Yamahas CVT atv/utv.

Thanks again

true: the "wet clutch" that you refer to is basically friction plates that engage when centrifugal force overcomes the tension springs. automotive oil contains friction modifiers that will get embedded in the friction material and cause them to slip which will cause glazing and destroy the plates. its about a $4-500 fix. This applies to basically all yamaha atvs and utvs automatic or not.

I have a Kawasaki Prairie 400 with centrifugal clutch. I am not aware nor can I find any wet clutches in the parts fiche for this engine/transmission.

I looked at the parts fiche for a Yamaha 700 and cant find it either.

Please show me which part it is on a parts fiche because if these engines are sensative to Moly I'd like to know because I've used 10w30 Mobil 1 in the winter and have not had any problems.

Thanks.

i run the castrol 0-30 good so far its rated very good & allot of race teams use it.oh & stay away from the energy conserving oils they have allot of detergents & additives.

I have run yamalube since day one and thinking about switching to amsoil. I can get a full synthetic for a lot less then the semi-sythentic yamalube.

Anyone try amsoil? 0-30 amsoil for atvs.

Tryed it , did not like it . On this motor went back to the semi-sythentic yamalube , my engine builder does not like the full synthetic,s

Seanny, go on the Yamaha Canada website and scroll down on the cover page, there is a lot of info regarding Yamalube and how its developed. I had a pretty good conversation with the Yamaha oil specialist when I was in Banff and the oil is developed for each engine with unique additives weather it a has a wet clutch or cold pour qualities. I find a lot of engine builders recommending the Yamalube in their engines. Happy searching buddy. Shad
