Enclosed Trailer Wall Dropped!!??

That looks like a design flaw to me. What make is the trailer?

I have the trailer at Standens right now and they said the same thing. The beam that the axles are mounted on are to short and all metal underneath is to light a grade.
Its a Cargo Mate!!

I have a 1996 pace, 24ft. Under neath the trailer, you couldnt tell mine from yours in age. My trailer used to belong to Van amburg. There is fish plating on both of my frame rails right were your is cracked. I guessing whoever fix mine, jacked up the rails @ the back then rewelded it. The roads in BC are brutal on hiway vehicles, trailers, semi trucks, etc. Espically from Golden to Revy! There is times the tires leave the ground. Good luck in getting it fix or replaced. Hopefully a new trailer for you is around the corner.

I was thinking the same thing,it looks old but the trailer shop where my trailer is at thinks that is fresh, when you walk in the trailer the gap spreads wider.
I do hope my insurance covers it!!!

THAT IS NOT A FREASH CRACK!!! THE TRAILER SHOP YOU ARE USING SHOULD HAVE SEEN THAT WHEN THEY WERE WORKING ON THE AXLE'S...but most people in these shops anymore have tunnel vision!! and no common sense..

Why were both axles replaced originally?

I took the trailer in to get all new brakes and bearings and to get all new wiring and battery.
First trip out on the way back home found out the hard way that they forgot to grease one side of the trailer.
Running dry on grease for over two thousand km completely ruined both axles.

Cargo mates are cheaply constructed trailers. Although they want a lot for them. Ibeam frame is not as torsional strong. I have seen this before on trailers were people load a lot on the walls. Not in your case though. If you get a new a trailer down the road, I highly recommend Charmac. They are all tube constructed and they overbuild their trailers.

This is the last Cargo Mate I will ever buy!!!
From all the enclosed I have looked at since buying mine I would say they are one of the worst built on the market!

Sorry for your experience. I'm a trailer dealer and have learned our lesson by selling cheap, low quality stuff as it always comes back to us. If you ever in the market and want to make a drive, I can get you a deal on a new one.

I'm no engineer by any means, but it would seem to me that those metal pieces under the decking shaped like a "U" would be stronger set the other way with the "U" facing up (The load) than facing down.

Those type of beams are supposed to be in tension not compression right?

Any structural engineers care to comment?

Am I thinking about this correctly?

I got the news from my adjuster this afternoon that they are going to fix my trailer.........Ahhhhhh now I can relax!!:face-icon-small-hap

That's Very good news Dave, congrats!:beer;

Are you gonna continue to run it after it's fixed or switch to a different brand trailer?

Thanks Seth, with the way they are talking about fixing it I may keep it for a while longer.
I am thinking about building a fifth wheel enclosed trailer......

The picture of the frame crack isn't at the best angle, but the crack almost looks too straight and perpendicular. Any chance they scabbed two pieces together to get the proper length? Spooky, but I drive by one of their assembly plants and they are not equipped to build rockets.

I was thinking the same thing.

Dave, that sucks. glad your ok buddy. I know a sweet all aluminum sled trailer you could buy.lol If your gonna buy a new trailer bag the Canadian dealer and head down south. pick up a 4 place for 8500 bucks with poly bead and the works.

As stated above "Flaw By Design" A light weight poorly engineered cargo trailer won't cut in the enviroment we drag them through. If they pay to fix it I would trade it off quickly !!! Sorry >>>>.

It looks like the crack started from a poor weld on top where the cross member was welded on. Probably welded across the main beam or serious undercut on the corners. As far as I beam not being as strong as tubing, have you ever seen a flat deck highway trailer made out of tubing? IMO get rid of the tor flex axles and put on leafs with a walking beam in the middle. It takes a lot of stress off the trailer frame and axles when on rough road. When you hit a frost heave or hole with a tor flex the front axle has to lift the entire weight of the trailer, where as with a walking beam the load will still be evenly distributed between both axles. Plus if your trailer doesn't sit perfectly level it will not load one axle more than the other.

Dave I would take the check and sell the trailer as is to someone who has the time and skills to fix it themselves. You might have $7000 to spend on something a lot better. The whole design is weak and the materials are really light too. You are gonna be driving that road a lot I assume and how long do you think that trailer will live even with an upgraded fix.
