Emigration Canyon

Anyone tried to access Grandview Peak area from Emigration Canyon before? Emigration is close to SLC and I have heard that you can unload and ride just up from the golf course. But it seems like it would be hard to find anything off the road to ride, or at least some serious side hilling to get over to grandview peak. Maybe not a problem on the snowhawk though?? Don't want to waste a day trying it if someone has already checked it out.

It sure looks like you could. There's a neighborhood that gets within a couple miles of Grandview Peak. Kinda curious to hear where to park myself.

I think this would be a great place to live. Maybe water shed issues though.

I dont' think you can get there without going down City Creek Canyon and then up Cottonwood Gulch past the Treasure Box Mine.. and you'll get your sled impounded in City Creek Canyon.

If you don't want to ride from Bountiful you could try North Canyon from North Salt Lake and and almost straight up the ridge to Grandview. In '76 we towed a sled out that way.. But I haven't been up North Canyon since the early 80's and don't know what's going on there now.

Which way??

I am curious to know which way you have gone and if it is legal to ride off the road up emigration. On google maps looks like you could take off emigration road at Birch Springs and go north between Lookout Peak and Box Spring Hollow right over towards Grandview Peak.

You can hike that in the summer, there is a trail. In the winter all you will do is piss off the skiers and elitist snobs that live up emigration and get yourself a ticket.

Once again, sleds are not allowed on snow (other than private land and the road up guardsman) in Salt Lake County. It is a watershed violation.

Phatty, do you know the county regulation? We used to ride Butterfield Canyon in the Oquirrh Mtns. Is that illegal?

Here is the official watershed site for SL county

Watershed Regulations:

Salt Lake City - County Health Regulation #14 (watersheds) is authorized by Utah Code Annotated 26-24-20.
It is unlawful for any person:

  • to permit a dog (s) to be taken into the watershed area. This does not apply to seeing eye/hearing dogs or law enforcement dogs.
  • to pollute or allow pollution of any water in the watershed area.
  • to operate any type of motor vehicle upon the property within the watershed except on a highway or road open for public use, approved roads in residential/cabin areas, official picnic/camp area roads, and ski area parking lots. Emergency and official government vehicles are exempt when on official business.
  • to deposit any human excreta within the watershed area other than into approved toilets. Cesspools are also prohibited.
  • to permit a horse or any other domestic animal into the area without a permit.
  • to camp overnight except in officially designated campgrounds. This does not apply to backpacking.
  • to backpack camp unless the campsite is located over 200 feet from the nearest water source
  • to bathe, swim or wash clothes, diapers, eating utensils, or any other object in any spring, marsh, stream, or other water source.
  • to throw or break glass.
These regulations apply in the entire canyon area from ridge top to ridge top, not just in the immediate area of surface water.

Enforcement:

Water regulations are enforced by the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, the Salt Lake City Water Department, the Salt Lake City - County Health Department, the US Forest Service, and the Alta Marshal's Office.
Violations constitute a Class "B" misdemeanor and in most cases a citation is issued to violators.
