Electrical Issues with 09 D8

Ok so I went out for a ride on Saturday (2/15) and my sled ran fine, but toward the end of the ride I noticed that my display went out and my headlights were dim. The display/headlights would work off and on through the remainder of the ride. I knew it was something I should fix but since it was otherwise running fine I didn't think much of it. I went out for a quick ride today and it ran fine for about 30 minutes and then it would start to bog down and shut off on me. On the way back down to the truck it shut off countless times within the 4-5 mile ride. I'm not sure whats wrong and really haven't checked anything out yet, And im not sure if the headlight/display issue is related to the sled bogging down and shutting off or not. Any idea?

Your vr is burned up, if u keep trying to run it more than likely u will toast the ecu. Take your ecu off and smell the bottom, if it smells burnt then replace both. If u have to replace ecu it needs to be flashed with whatever map u r currently running.

What he said.....

ok, just pulled my ECU, doesn't smell burnt, Hopefully a VR does the trick, any other electrical stuff I should check while i'm in there? I know people have had electrical gremlins with these before.

I've posted this many times so here ya go:

You need 3 things to have a reliable Dragon.
#1 Fix kit (if you don't know what this is google it - my fav. is mtntk).
#2 Power Commander fuel controller
#3 Spare VR (keep it in your pack)

Oh, and find a place that sells non-ethanol premium gas.

electrical gremlins

Check carefully the big cord of wires that runs along the front left nose of the sled for abrasions. I had a grounding issue due to that steel cable that holds the hood OPEN rubbing on this wiring harness when the hood was down. It rubbed to the point that wore thru the harness to the wire. it produced the very same symptoms that you state. Was a quick fix. Difficult to find....

Ok so i put a Voltage regulator in, sled ran fine for my entire ride today, but toward the end of the ride I noticed my display screen was not working once again. I rode it for about 30 minutes after I first noticed it and the sled ran fine. I'm not very knowledgeable about all this electrical crap so i'm kinda in a pickle, I don't want to have to put a 150 dollar part into it every time I ride.

Well that's the part number that I got on my new one when my old one took a crap n Mondays ride.

From what I understand that part number is a new release as of December.

I would double check all your connections and maybe check your stator.

So i talked to a lady with an 08 dragon who had replaced her V/R and ECM last year and she said her display screen stopped working after that but hasn't had any other problems with how the sled runs. I've started my sled and let it idle and the headlights work, as do the grip warmers and it seems to idle fine. I'm still a little hesitant to take it for ride though. Has anyone else had their display screen just fail without any additional issues? Also how do i check the V/R and Stator to see if their good or not. Like i said i'm new to all this electrical/computer stuff so I appreciate your patience.

there is a relay on top of the clutch guard right next to the voltage regulator, I would replace that before I bought anything else. its the cheapest part and will make the headlights and the gauge not work
