EGT or AFR

I am putting a boondocker race gas turbo on my 07 M8. I already have digatron egts. Should I sell the egts and replace with afr or keep the egts? Running low on funds so both is not an answer. I've heard differing opinions on this. Just wanted to get a feel for what the majority thinks.

Thanks,

Mike

I have both but I am only running my afr gauge. It works great and no problems with it. I personaly prefer the afr to egt but some will argue different. It depends on what you are comfortable with and understand best. Both will give you useable info for tuning. 14.7 afr is full fuel to air burn. Everything lower than that is extra fuel richening the mixture and cooling the burn. Optimum is 12.5ish for 2 strokes. I am running my afr at 12.3-12.4@WOT. When running in the mid range it is common to see 13-15 afr. WOT is the big factor.

Hope this helps.

Both is better

If you are running race gas I would suggest you think long and hard about using both. You never know when one system may stop working or what to do if it seems things are going a little heywire. With both you are as safe as you can get, especially when making big jumps in boost.

Think of it this way.... Burning down and replacing pistons and cylinders will cost a lot more in $$$$ and down time than running the extra sensors.

If you are determined to run only one then I would say EGT's.

Good luck and have fun. DB

Did you just,, yep you sure did. :tape:

Well I would talk to dealers and bd. I would also run both no matter what they said. But many just use one. from what I've heard most like the AFR for turbos but it would sure be nice to watch those egts in the mid range.

What are your egts on a long climb with 12.3-12.4 a/f ratio?

The nice thing about a A/F gauge is how fast it reacts and the accuracy is good, EGTs are great for seeing if the burn in the cylinders are equally but you can also do that with a plug reading. The AEM wideband is priced under 200.00 now, I have not used EGTs in years they just seem to slow and sketchy. I would not run both, You got enough stuff to watch, with boost the ground seems to get moving pretty fast. A boost gauge, A/F gauge and a fuel pressure gauge is pretty much the norm. Pack a extra o2 sensor if your worred about the thing not working, you can tune your sled without it if you have to, run it fat and pull fuel untill it cleans up.

Yeah, I know. Race gas turbo and no money doesn't go together very well. I just promised myself I would only spend so much and I've already reached that and beyond.

So, it seems like most people like AFR over egts. Another reason I don't want both is because how the he$$ do you look at all the gauges while running on boost. Seems kinda dangerous.

In the mid range watch the egts on top watch the afr and check the egts record for high temps.

Looking down to read the afr is tough . The best part about the AEM is the led lights that sweep around the face of the gauge . And most of the time i get a glance at them they are blurry as can be.

I have never had the egt gauges but the afr work well.

I have both egt and afr but I am only running the afr. I was maybe going to run my egt's one of these days just out of curriosity. The afr gauge works fine though and I haven't had any issues. The response of the afr is awesome too.

I'm running the prosport afr gauge and it works and looks nice. It uses the Bosch 4.9 sensor and the AEM uses the Bosch 4.2 sensor. I have read that the 4.9 sesnor is designed to be more resistant to leaded fuels and such. Does anyone have any knowledge, experience or opinions between the two different sensors?

Boondocker also recommends EGT's i believe. Do EGT sensors have the same issues with race fuel as the AFR's?

Thank you. I was just wondering how the egts would look with correct afr on a two stroke. I use afr to tune my street/drag bikes, but have only used egt on my two stroke snowmobiles. I tune to 1300 on my turbo xp. I would think the egts would be alot lower then 1300 with a 12.2-12.4 a/f ratio, but just guessing as I have never ran egts and a/f at the same time.

If I do end up running the egt gauges I will let you know the comparative readings. I'm not back in country until dec 18 at the earliest though. Having read peoples different experiences and how the temps can differ from sled to sled and probe placement is a big factor. I measured twice so I hope my probe placement is good and temps are spot on.
