Educate me on Snowy Range

I was being sarcastic just trying to keep the madras a secret
I did get that.
For us it's a long haul and I don't want to go all that way and find out it sucks.
All riding areas depends on snow. I just don't want to run into a zoo. We go west to get away from that. But I promise we will go there, tread lightly, have fun, and leave lots of $$$. My big snowmobile goal in life is to try as many different riding areas as I possibly can. :second:

snowys

If you are not dead set on riding from your door Cenntenial is a option , we usually stay at the Old Corral , couple bars , gas , Bear Tree is the name of the nicer bar / resaurant /pizza joint , as said before green rock parking area can get very buisy. good luck

Thank you doozy.
We are now leaning toward the west side. I am learning quickly about the whole area thanks to so many here on Snowest. As of today I am getting less than enthusiastic recent snow reports about the area. Maybe I am wrong. :noidea:

If you want to ride from your door, park up past Green Rock and stay at Mountain Meadows. You'll have to take gas cans and run back to Centennial to fill them up, but its worth it. Chris and Michelle at Mtn Meadows have been great to our group.

I prefer the west side the extra 1 1/2 hour drive is so worth it imho. I think it usually has better snow and less traffic and I like the riding on that side especially when its windy. Stick to the trees when its windy. The hobo hot springs in Saratoga are also nice to check out.

The trip.....

I have not been out to the snowies for many years, but had a blast there back in the mid 2000's. Albany Lodge is a great place, full package deal (ride from door), but as stated is a pretty good poke up the trail to "get up top". They do how ever have the bar and TV you wanted. Making the run every day would by no means ruin the trip, but cuts in to your real "mountain type riding" time/gas. It's all fun if they have snow, as we have none here.

If you stay in town/Laramie Then you got the dealers, bars, Hotels, fast food, cheap gas, but a load/unload and drive every day. Plus the hassle of the lot at the end of the road. Its busy up there to say the least on the weekend. You do how ever drive right past the ski hill on the way. Lots of times it's much warmer in Laramie than up on the mountain...and that can be a nice thing.

Staying in Centenial can offer riding right from the door if they get the right snow, and the trail is still open down there to the ski hill? Other wise its a 6mileish jaunt up the hill and unload deal. Much closer than Laramie, and bar/tv/gas.

Laramie and centennial both make you have to ride over Libby Flats and can be spooky if windy and snowing....which happens a lot=white out. Once past, you drop back down into the tree line and its way better. All in all it's a great place, and if you have never been, grab a map and go. Steep and deep right off the trail....but gets beat up quick. Just remember they have a bad ice layer, and some really big hills that slide often. Check the warnings, and play in the medows if need be.

Sleds need to be set up for anything from 8000 and up as a base starting point. My lungs hurt thinking about it...lol

Driving....I live south of the cities, we always went down to 80 and over, good road, usually warm and less chance of hitting a storm.:face-icon-small-hap

I-90 to hotsprings ,sd is how we go. Check the weather before u leave. If it's snowing on I-90 we take I-80.
I would rather take I-90 if the roads are bad, I-80 is normally closed when the roads get bad cause it is very windy and lots of hills!

If you ride from Centennial, like people have said make sure you show up early, the parking is pretty bad up there, lots of people! Also make sure you pack extra gloves for going over the top of the pass, it is extremely windy til you get to the bottom and when you get there, that's when the fun begins! Have fun! :)

Not sure what the roads are like north of Cheyenne but I know they seem to really enjoy closing I80 between Cheyenne and Laramie when the winds start blowing snow.
