Ears 11-16

I can't believe how little snow there is, I was thinking after our ride by the house this weekend in the 5" of snow, that some of the pics of other places would look a lot better, wow.

Worst early season in 10 years by far.

Yep, pretty much the same every year at the Ear's. Nov. 04 was the last year I remember 4' of snow on the ground for turkey day, but it fell on not much base the week before. Seems the first few weeks of December is about as early as you can expect to poke around off trail, and then not much until close to January.

If you check out the historical snotel data it shows that RE precip is about a 1/2" under what last year was, but Buff is a 1/2" over. Daily temps don't start staying below freezing until December on the pass, so snow is going to melt til then. Buff has been below freezing for over a week now during the day:) Buff's about 13 miles north, so hit the trail and the snow gets better all the way to there.

Yeh, last year I went riding up at Corona Pass October 23rd, but wasn't able to go again til mid December. So the snow came late, but I was also sledding through the second week in May. I'd be ok with late snow if we could have another season like last year, it was awesome.

stuck

i will never forget being stuck behind the gilpin county school 3 years ago and late for a halloween event there. our snow winter usually doesn't start until 3/1.

I remember the news making a big deal out of last November and how everyone was running around chicken littling. They even made a point how WC ski area had 11 feet of snow the November before and only 4 inches through the same time period last november. Then December came and it wouldn't stop.

I hope they complain again this year, last winter was awesome. it will come, and we will all be smilin....

last year was a slow start, but around us here we had WAY more snow last year, it looked like this by late october, by turkey day we had full coverage.

Seems as though it comes a little later each year, but sticks around like its not kidding.

All I want is 12" by 121508 for the south central areas, is that to much to ask, come on!

I want way more than another 12" by the 15th of Dec. I broke my ankle the w/e before xmas last year by hitting something under the snow.

Getting close though, I ordered my clutch kit, egts, and 4 gallons of oil. :D

Last year the Steamboat Ski area had to delay opening until mid December because of no snow and warm temps. Then we had 3 straight 100"+ months.
Ended up with the all time record snowfall totals.
Lets hope we have a repeat this season!

Allright I should have qualified my answer, a minimum of 12" with hopes of much more :)

no you didnt.i remember on nov. 27th the ski resort was green all the way to the top. then 2 days later there was like 4 ft and the snow didnt stop until feb. yesterday there was snow (man made?) on at least one run all the way to the lifts

It's gonna come. Last year at my hose (ss vicinity) we received 8" in Oct (right in the middle of f'n hunting season), 6" in Nov, 43" in Dec, and it did not start until the 7th of Dec. Now I am not at elevation, but the ski area runs about 3-4" to my 1". 2006 was about the same... 17" in Oct (right in the middle of f'n hunting season), 18" in Nov, 22" in Dec. The snow in Nov was not until late in the month. Know a fella that lives at elevation on Cameron Pass, and has for almost 30 years. He watches the birds migration and says a big year is coming. A local rancher tells me he has watched the wasps nests in the trees his whole life living in the area. When the nests are high, the snow will come. This year they are high. The pacific ocean temps are not either el nina, or la nina. The temps posting this year in the pacific have occurred 5 times in the last 50 years. Three of those years have been some of the driest on record, the other two have been some of the wettest. I am pretty sure the last one was the 96-97 season (second snowiest in steamboat??). So, my fingers are crossed that we are gonna have a late start, but GREAT season...
