Eagle River, AK

I'm investigating a job in Eagle River. It looks like I should be looking at the over all Anchorage information. What can you guys tell me about the area for housing and schools?

Eagle River is a suburb of Anchorage, Nice area good schools, a little on the pricey side for homes. There are good parts of Anchorage and bad parts, the schools are bigger so you have that to deal with. I prefer the smaller schools in the Mat-su valley and to commute to Anchorage for work. The commute to Eagle River is a cake walk. about 1/2 hour. Eagle River is where traffic starts to get stupid so if you work in Eagle River and live in the Valley (as we call it) the commute is no problem. Homes are less expensive and lots are bigger in the Valley.

Eagle River/Chugiak is the best of the best!! Been here since 65, watched it grow a ton, but still love it here

I would be doing outside sales and support for the construction/surveying industry and wouldn't have to go to the office every day. What areas are best to drive around and not stop? As I look at housing and schools(elementary) I don't want to waste time on the "bad" areas.

If you were to drive from the south side of the "valley" to the north, how long would it take during rush hour? What's the price for a gallon of milk, gas and a 12er of better beer?

I just typed a f'n book and my computer freaked out. Check out google earth. The Valley is a combined term for the Palmer, wasilla Area. I live in an area east of Palmer known as the Butte, Its a little redneck but hey so am I.
Good schools in the valley and eagle river. The only place i will not live is Anchorage, dont like cities larger than say 8000 people.

milk $4 gallon
gas $3 gallon
12er coke $6

If Eagle River is "the best of the best" then you need to get out more. I started living there on 1961. Used to be able to ride from my parents house and go in any direction. Can't do that anymore. I moved north when they put the first stoplight in and haven't looked back. Now I ride from my house on the Knik river.

Thanks. My wife is a paralegal, so the city is where she would make her money, so I can't get too far away. How about the development? Where's that happening?

Hey YD

My brother lives in Anchorage now. Sounds like you need to go up & visit & see where ya like it. Let me know if you go up there & visit. I want to live in Alaska someday.....

Some one else will have to chime in there, I work in the medical field so I can't help you there. Oh and my idea of a city and ours may be different, there are only 250,000 in Anchorage.

Actually, I think Anchorage is a bit closer to 300, but it is still a far cry from endless city like the Seattle area has to offer. I'm not sure why you would want to move here, AK SUCKS! TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS TO STAY AWAY :) :) :) All the riding pictures are just photoshopped because it never snows. There are no mountains, and NO world class riding areas anywhere in Alaska. There are just people just sitting behind the 'puter' photoshopping all kinds of cool pix. AK is just a FLAT, DESOLATE, BORING place to live.....you would be better off in Fargo :):):)

Seriously though.....Welcome. Hope you know how to ride! We will have a good winter sometime :)

p.s. Anchorage and Eagle river suck! The 'Valley' is where its at! You cant ride from your door in Anchorage like you can out here!

c-bolt is right...there is no snow in alaska...we all set around the computers gathering pics of other places and saying they are us riding here...heres a few examples of canada and the western states....:D:beer;:beer;:D

Eagle river is very similar to North Bend, A small town just outside of a big city, housing is real close in price too. And there isn't two gay guys rolling around on ktms are M7's.:D

As with everything, your choice of a place to live around Anchorage will involve both goods and bads. More affordable housing with larger yards in the valley and lots of great riding areas nearby, but a long commute to Anchorage for the wife (and if the wife isn't happy then....). Living in Anchorage, especially the south side, puts you closer to lots of amazing riding in Turnagain Pass and Placer river and closer to 'downtown' for nightlife, cultural events etc.., however you will have higher housing prices, a few more 'populated area issues' and you live in a suburb where you are trailering your sled to ride it. Eagle River is in the middle. You're 30 minutes further from Turnagain, but 30 minutes closer to all the riding to the North, you are still trailering to the riding areas and living basically in a suburb. But you get a little bit of the small town feel, excellent schools etc....and still have reasonable access to everything you need, plus a much shorter commute to Anchorage.
You could discuss this all day, the bottom line is you just need to come see it. My wife took one look at the commute from the valley and said no way, but for other people they drive it everyday and it doesn't really bother them. I have friends in all three areas and they all love where they live. So come on up and check it out.

Your really going to have to check it out, everyone is different. For us we wanted at least an acre of land and a 4 bedroom house that was built in the last 5 years. Anchorage and eagle river was out of our price range, but we got exactly what we wanted for less than we thought it was going to be. We live in a nice neighborhood between wasilla and palmer. I wouldn't want my wife making the commute, but I do it everyday to the airport in anchorage. It takes me 50 minutes from my house to work. It all depend on what you want, from my research the eagle river schools are good schools, but we wanted our two high school kids in a smaller school.

i say wasilla, nice and large propertys available, small but has all, and best of all its centered to all riding areas, and the commute is not that bad ...you get up and leave the house by 5:30 and your in anchorage under 45 min. i do it everyday. good luck and welcome to this misserable state;)

Yammadog, Opinions on housing, schools, commuting, etc is just like asking what kind of sled to buy or what oil to run.... As you can see everyone likes where they live, so it depends on what YOU find that fits your needs/wants/budget. So, here's my opinion; Eagle River does have suburban lots in the downtown and Walmart area, but we also have rural acreage in the Eagle River Valley along Eagle River Road and Hiland Road. We are also conveniently located between the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage, so whether you are heading north or south for riding, fishing, hunting, and even work it is a nice location. EVERYONE hauls their sleds to ride in different locations up here depending on snow and riding conditions. (Except at Arcticman where everyone rides from their front doors :beer;)

Oh ya, like c-bolt and AKSNOWRIDER have said, all those pictures are photoshopped and we can see Russia from our front yards!
