Drive Chain Bearing Issue

Working on replacing the drive chain bearing's on my late build 03 900 1M. The original bearing's I pulled out had a o-ring built right into the bearing cup. The original lower PN# 0702-485 sub's up to a 1702-179 which is the same overall but does not have an o-ring built into the cup...they also supply with the bearing a seal to go over the collar which I dont see the purpose of. Anyone with this same experience or able to shed some light for me? Just want to be sure I'm installing the correct parts.

The seal goes over the chaincase side of the bearing under the flange. Put a little RTV on the shaft to seal the shaft to the inner race. I guess the built in o-ring bearings had reliability problems, at least I heard that though the grapevine.

They changed the design, because the bearing was splitting where the o-ring is. They went back to the norm where the bearing goes on then the o-ring then the cover.

I had the same question.

Service Manager called Arctic Cat. They said the cup is to keep the chain case oil out of the bearing. Apparently it is a sealed bearing, and the oil was washing the grease out.

FYI:

When My bearing went out, I found out on the next ride that my brakes were not releasing completely, thus causing the disk, and shaft, and everything on that side to get too hot. You may want to check to see if you have undue resistance on the brakes.

& I wouldn't suggest just grabbing ahold of it without some snow or water in your hand. It was hot enough that it could have really scored me...

Cup goes on the side of the bearing furthest away from the tunnel, to inside of chaincase.

sorry to bring back an old post, but if I install this new bearing at the picture shows, what is stopping chaincase oil from going between the bearing and the case? The gives two seals on the driveshaft but nothing around the outer edge.

Any information would be great as this has me stumped.

There is an o-ring that goes over the bearing and under the triangle shaped bearing retainer plate.

Personally, I just use a light wipe of silicone on the outside of the bearing, and also a light wipe of silicone on the driveshaft. I've been doing it this way for many years and never had a leak.
