DPF buyers beware

Not to make anybody mad but i recieved a letter from a dealer friend. This letter was to Anne Wick of the EPA and the Diesel Engine Consent Decree Coordinator. This letter was from Clint Cannon of ATS Diesel. It was reguarding the sale of DPF delete kits and who was selling and buying them. H&S Performance is the company named which is also PDI(Performance Diesel Inc) from St. George, Utah. Not saying this is bad but buyer beware that the EPA may come calling. I myself am a Diesel Mechanic and Performance shop also and this is a low blow to the small guy trying to make a living. If anyone wants to read this letter pm me with your email and i will send it to you. Thanks to anyone and everyone that read this, let me know what you think. Thanks John

Well if i understand what youre saying, i think that i wont be buing any ATS stuff. Looks like me might have a tattle tell. Doubt it will be much of a problem the epa probablly doesn't have the man time to track down every pdf delete to check and see if they are being used incorrectly.

Modjunkie, you are understanding it correct, this just went off like a bomb on every diesel/truck forum ive heard of. Loser moves like this is what is going to bring an end to the diesel performance game sooner then later...

Dear AXXX:

I would like to start by thanking you for speaking with Stewart Cables and myself at SEMA. You and your team did a very good job of preventing the meeting attendees from rioting!

As you may or may not be aware, ATS Diesel has been working on certain emission technologies to better our niche in the diesel community. Currently, we’re funding and developing a very expensive Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) technology; this product will allow more efficient flow, resulting in better fuel mileage and lower emissions than today’s technology. ATS’ profits are funding the majority of this project’s development budget.

A serious concern that we have — and dramatically affects the development of our new high flow DPF -- is the presence of so-called “DPF Delete Kits” on the market. Right now consumers are looking for a solution to the problematic factory DPF exhaust systems, and a few companies out there are manufacturing and/or selling these DPF delete kits for a very low margin.

As you’re aware, the main problem with DPF delete kits is this: for every illegal kit sold, research money is not invested into a real “fix” for the consumer’s problem. EPA has made it clear to the diesel manufacturing industry, in no uncertain terms, that DPF removal is illegal. However, at this time, EPA has been unable to enforce its regulations to get these illegal DPF delete kits off the street. When we spoke a few weeks ago, you mentioned that the EPA can only enforce so many of its regulations right now, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to track offenders (whether they be manufacturers, resellers, or end users).

ATS has prepared a list of the larger DPF Delete kit manufacturers and resellers, gleaned from our knowledge of the industry, for you. We’ve also included support documentation for your convenience. A few of these act as resellers (in place of manufacturers) in an attempt to hide behind a “shell corporation.” Performance Diesel, Inc. (“PDI”) in St. George, Utah is one of these companies. Jared Wittwer, the owner of PDI, is also the creator of H&S Performance, (www.hsperformance.net). All of these kits are assembled at PDI in Utah and sold through PDI as though H&S Performance manufactures them. Attached is a copy of one of the receipts PDI invoices on; the part number should easily be used to help track down additional units that PDI or H&S have sold over the last year. We have been told by PDI’s manager that they sell over 100 units per month.

ATS is relying on the EPA to enforce its rules on this matter so we can generate enough revenue to properly manufacture a “fix” to the DPF problem. The word in our industry is that 1) if you don’t manufacture, you are allowed to resell, install, and use, and 2) manufacturers or resellers can hide behind the “Race Only’ labeling that the products are sold under. The fact is, and as I’m sure you know, nearly all of these kits are being used for on road trucks. Thank you for taking the time to listen.

dpf

i am a tech at a volvo and gmc dealer ship. the oem's told us at the start of the new emissions coming out that the epa told them anyone altering or deleting the emissions is subject to a fine. it would be $10,000 to the tech for EACH item altered or deleted, $25,000 to the shop owner per item also. this means if you remove the dpf, the two sensors on it that would be $30,000 to the tech. they sound pretty serious. beware, you never know where they might show up.

Coxy thanks for posting letter did not know how to put in on here. This will make people think about buying parts from ATS Diesel.

They can run but not hid

:mad:OLD "ATS" CLINT AND STEWIE better be very carefull when they start throwing names and Buisness under the bus, Im sure that they have not followed the EPA to the book themselves. That is pretty SHI$$Y on there part to do this, this could be one mistake to come back and bite them one way or another??? thanks for the info DR. D. I guess when i buy my DPF kit it will be cash and no recipet, so my buddies Clint and Stewie cant find me:face-icon-small-coo

Not much different then being illegal to remove the muffler or cat, but mine fell off I didn't remove it! :D They can try to enforce it all they want, but good luck against the people removing it on their own trucks. They can only enforce it on shops.

The different truck forums that are out there all have great things to say also. From what i get this was not suposed to get out but ya know how things get started are by writing some thing thats not to get out. Then it shows up some where. Well for ATS this will not be good.

What an F N Ahole of a company, just saved me 5K on an ATS tranny, thanks. SunCoast here I come.

It was just released that this was never sent to the EPA but someone broke into Clint's e-mail and released this to the public. It was supposedly drafted up but was never supposed to be in the public. There was a post on some of the diesel forums about it.

I am in NO way associated with ATS and have never bought any of their stuff BTW

I think that's a bigger fine than Conrad Black got......lol

Yeah, theres about 10 new pages dailey on the threads that are not locked down already on this topic. It was his lawyers doing, his email got hacked, noone named names... but regardless, even if that bs is correct, the lawyer didnt just make up the names, and make up the attached invoice crap all on his own... I didnt put up this letter as pure fact or anything, its just so people know what the topic really means and to what extent.

Well DPF, EGR and EGR Cooler is off my truck and would do it again. One look at your first oil change should make you a non believer in the dpf. ROLL SMOKE.

no DPF on mine, but the EGR system is deleted, and no cat... it is just a givin.

They seem to be a better truck with everything removed. Better power and mileage. Why did the goverment screw with all of this stuff.

I went from averaging 15 to 16.5 mpg when a dumped the cat and went to 5" exhaust turbo back. ATS builds some really good stuff, to bad i can't buy any of it anymore. Oh well sure PDI can hook me up with some great stuff. :D I run a buisness too, and have known all kinds of illegal things that there doing but i don't say anything to anybody. If ATS wants to put money into a DPF thats great, but its pure crap to take it out on somebody who already has a solution. My buddy has put 40,000 on his 07 6.7 and put on 3 DPF's already. Talk about a waste all they do is take'em off and junk. You start figuring the number of pick ups out there and the amount they will change out. Then figure the amount of fuel and steel and the other crap that they put in the filters, and whos helping out more. The dpf or the deletes.
