Doing some brick work at home in the off season

Figured I would share our little project. My parents wanted something different than what we always had in front of the house, so me and a friend came up with a design, after a few small changes, here's where we are at at the moment.

Here's the best pic I could find of what we used to have here. Was Pretty much a dirt hill, sloping away from the house with cement retaining walls on both sides. The far side was about twice the height of the side you can see here. Was very plain looking and didn't flow very well with anything.

I have access to a skid steer, wheel loader, back hoe and body job at work, so we stripped that all away, and started by pouring a footing for the outside row of bricks.

I worked on it all day yesterday and here's how I left off. Finally starting to look like something now. :) Need to order caps, and the wider stair caps before we can do much more.

You can see where the stairs will come there, planning to have three steps up there, some kind of brick sidewalk, that will curve right, then we will run brick steps up to the deck in the old location. On the right hand side there will be a bit of a flower bed, about two feet wide going with the shape of the front row of bricks then two layers of bricks behind it, and a washed rock area in the back. Putting in the front three stairs in the next step, then we'll do the inside row of bricks for the flower bed on the right hand side. Lots of work! But it's a fun project. Figured I would share.

They will be a while yet I'm afraid. We are so insanely busy that this is moving pretty slow at the moment. But they will come yet. I hope. Lol :)

Can I buy you a plane ticket to Minneapolis? I need help with my project similar to this one.........

What will it take?

Haha that sounds sweet! Would be a great holiday. :) all expense paid trip? I would actually quite enjoy that. Brick
Work is fun once you get the base right

Work is fun once you get the base right

There in-lies the problem..........

The base.............

I have areas that rise 15 feet from the bottom to the top....... I want to use 4x6 treated timbers (Have made many a wall from that stuff)

Momma, wants what you have.......

Momma wins ALWAYS.........

O dear. Poor guy. You wanted to build it using what you know, and now she wants bricks? I hope her pocket book is pretty deep. lol Cause that's a lot of wall. Just the bricks you see here, including the ones on the pallets, was $3000. This would only be a start for you by the sounds of it. Do you have some pics of the area you want to work with? Would love to see it.

Update

Got some more done today. The caps showed up yesterday so that was nice. We capped half of the walls we have done, and started with the stairs. Here's some pics. Spent about five hours today. Cutting those caps is a job and a half! Man.:boxing:

More next week I hope!

Man thats better than most pro jobs I have seen. You my friend found your calling in life. There are HUGE dollars to be made in landscaping if you get in the right places.

Thanks! I enjoy landscaping a lot. I work for the county here, in parks and playgrounds/campsites. So I do a lot of it at work. Pretty much do some form of it all summer. But I would love to set up my own company and do it for a living. But I would have to move. No market around here, as all the contractors who build also own a skid steer and "landscape" after they have built a house. And most people here don't care what kind of a job it is as long as there's grass growing. Any market thats left is is taken up by one guy, who's got the monopoly in landscaping here. So I'm toast. I could move, but don't really want to as this is just home. But I'll see what life brings. :) Thanks for the compliments!

The Yukon. There's a thought. Lol what's it take To get there? Can a guy drive? Thinking of going to Alaska next year to see what it's all about. Never thought about the Yukon.

if your driving to Alaska you have to go through the Yukon...
The Yukon is having a housing boom that is huge..!!...with thousands of lots to come open....and we don;t have alot of Landscapers so you could find your niche very easy...oh...and very lucrative..lol..

p.s.. return airfare from Edmonton with two weeks notice i think is about six hundred bucks...driving Edmonton is about 24 hours away
from Whitehorse

O I see. I always thought the Yukon was way far north, and a bit beside Alaska. Pretty sure I failed geography. Lol cool I like the sounds of that. I'll have to do some research into it. Sounds like a good opportunity, but I wouldnt want to live there permanently. That's a bit far north. O not bad at all. I'm nine hours north of edmonton yet. But have to go a bit south to get on the Alaska highway. But still not nearly as far as it would be to go from Edmonton. Is the boom pretty general or more concentrated to certain areas?

You could always do it part time and see where it goes.
