hey mule do you know camcorders?
thius one anygood never had flash card

48x zoom i think thats alot
With zoom, pay attention to optical vs. digital zoom. Most of them advertise the digital zoom, that goes up to 200-300x. However, all you'll get is blur and a few pixels here and there. Optical zoom is where the quality really sticks out. Digital zoom isn't bad for squeaking in a little more than the optical can, but go too far and you'll get nothing but junk.

also, re: flash... as that CMOS chip (the memory in flash memory) cools off, it requires more and more current to write to it, killing your battery life.

Hard drives are very sensitive to shock... probably not the best idea for sledding.

There's a reason professional cameras use DV tapes, MiniDV is a smaller form factor with the same technology.

And... get one with 1394/FireWire/iLink... all the same thing.

that'll make connecting it to a computer -way- easier. No drivers to mess with, and firewire's meant to handle video. USB is not.

I wouldn't go flash memory... stick with MiniDV. Best quality, tapes are cheap.

SD card in my picture camera worked great this winter/spring... cold didn't seem to phaze it a bit:D And it was very user friendly since I can barely turn this darn computer on and off:eek:

3x optical zoom was good quality, but got blury if you weren't perfectly still in the digital ranges

I wonder how many times optical zoom that camcorder is?

Because the current is drawn on write-cycles, look at how much data goes in and out of the flash memory on a still cam vs. a video camera. Every time you take a pic, it writes a meg or two to the memory. When your'e taking video, it's writing 9MB/sec to the memory.

Not surprising you didn't notice the difference. Hook up an ammeter to the power pin on the memory card, and run read/write operations over temperature.

....i hate being a geek :(

that's to complicated for me... I like to turn it on, take the pic or video, and turn it off again... that's how I roll:cool:
