Most people don't understand what the 1994 assault weapon ban did. It did not make it illegal to own high cap mags, just prevented further manufacturing and importation of them, same with AR-15's, they just couldn't have the combination of two of the following, pistol grip, flash suppressor, telescoping stock, Bayonet lug, Grenade launcher. Again it never made the previous models with these features illegal, just prevent further production.
As a collector with close to 200 guns the 1989 foreign assault weapon ban that HW Bush signed did the most damage, it stopped the import of 43 weapons (last count I own 35 of these) something it did not do was make them illegal to own. What it did was make a H&K SP89 that cost $600 now in the 3 to 4K range.
The Brady Bill did do a few things I agree with, I have no problem with background checks, also filling out a form 4473 does not bother me, that form is called in to the FBI call center, but that form is never sent to the ATF, in fact all the know is if your buying a rifle, shotgun or pistol, (now your local state and city laws may require registration)
I have be tagged by the ATF as a multiple buy on a few occasions, this means I bought five or six gun in one weekend (knob creek gun shows are great) the following week I had an agent call me asked about my purchases, he never knew what models I bought, just that they were rifles, I told him they were collector pieces, we had a brief conversation about them and that was it.
Do it think change is on the horizon, yes, what is it I don't know, but I don't that government agents are going to coming door to door.
