Do You Miss This Guy?

I was about 8 when he first took office. I wish I was an adult when he was in office...I know people don't appreciate the man...but he was a true patriot. He loved the hell out of this country, he was a man that believed in and respected God, he believed in the principles this country was founded on. I really believe it wasn't about himself when he served. He wanted to make this country better....we were strong and we were feared! I remember the day I came home from school and found my dad crying...the day Ronnie got shot. I asked my dad what was wrong and he told me. I think everyone who has served in the military that has had the time to study the Gipper...love him. Yes he made mistakes...all presidents have. But, holy chit he was tough...I wished we had a president that put the fear of God into our enemies like he did! He stared down an evil powerful super power and undoubtedly weakened them....leading to their collapse. "W" was tough, but he was watered down compared to the Gipper.

Honestly, hypothetically if GWB could have been the man to hold Ronnies Jock, what would be the chances that our country would be in the state of disarray we now enter? When the Gip spoke the world listened, they reacted, and they changed. Examples: Landslide Election Victories, US Captives Released, Creation of a Progressive Economy, Qhadafi silenced, Solidarity, The Berlin Wall brought down, Coup de Grace: The End of Communism. Too bad GWB couldn't handle the second term like his first. I understand Ronnie had his downfalls, but as MPS stated, he was a fair, morale, family first, give the shirt off his back kind of guy. I will put his credentials up against ole Abes any day. Abe was dealing with growing pains, Ronnie took on the world and grabbed it by the sac.

Although I still like Lincoln as a president Wade does make some valid points. Lincoln abused his power during his presidency and he fought a war against an enemy who for the most part wanted to just be left alone. He would not let the Union that stretched from Maine to Florida die under any circumstances.

I've often wondered what the borders would look like today if the Union was divided into two countries permanently.

OK, I'm disappointed. No one really challenged me.

The Articles of Confederation. This was the Constitution, before the US Constitution, written during the war. It was the original constitution, signed in 1781. One of it's provisions (Article XIII) was that the Union would be "perpetual".

Article XIII..... And the Articles of this Confederation shall be inviolably observed by every State, and the Union shall be perpetual; .....

Now, this document was superseded by the US Constitution, ratified in 1788. The stipulation of perpetually was not included in the US Constitution. But, Lincoln (and Jackson) did use this article as justification for going to war with the South.

There is a lot of disagreement about whether this really means a state can not succeed. Thomas Jefferson and John Calhoun believe a state could succeed if they wish, while Daniel Webster did not, due to the injury a single succession could inflict upon surrounding states. They all recognized the right of a state to revolutionary succession in the face of oppression by other states. But, warned about the penalties and consequences upon failure. After all, in the aftermath of revolutionary succession of the States from England, it was hard to argue that collections of states did not also possess the right of individual independence. One sticking point was, that even if it was illegal to succeed, the power to raise an army and force a state to stay within the union was not an enumerated power granted to Congress.

The Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution were the original fight between the States Rights and Federalist supporters.

My favorite part was when Regan busted the Air Traffic Controllers union. That really was a classic, really helped out the working man. Oh wait!
